There is only one way you can kill it stab it in its heart or destroy the entire body.
Unfortunately here all the heart and the body is the Internet, so unless you want to destroy the Internet or control every last bid of it.
You wonŽt be able to stop downloading.
Now will Downloading result in the death of Hollywood, well those who wonŽt or canŽt change to adapt to this new digital millennium, yes they will die such is now the way of things.
But those who have that extra brain cell or two to move with then all the others and adapts to this new era will survive and properly prosper.
If the government, and the powers that be had it their way, anyone who downloaded movies would be shot on sight, or castrated.
This setback will pass in time, I'm sure. While I use piratebay on a normal basis, there are other services. At least Limewire is still available. _________________ John R. Gibson

There's been a protest against the Pirate Bay Verdict.
I doubt they'll be able to overturn it but I think it's a big enough deal that people will take notice.
While I don't think that Piracy does as much damage to the industry (music, video etc.) as people make out, I do have a hard time justifying piracy (besides, you know, getting stuff for free).
Torrents are good for getting things that are not readily available - there's a lot of cult sci-fi (especially foreign language stuff) that doesn't get released here in Ireland. I do admit to using the internet for that (I'm no expert but isn't it okay legally, if there is no official release in existance). Generally I do buy something if it becomes available and definitely if I like it - it's usually smaller releases that need the support.
As for the sentence - it's a lot of money and a year feels harsh. I think they are definitely trying to send a message with this. The Pirate Bay always acted as though they were invincible - this is just to prove that they're not - that no one is above the law.
On the one hand, I do think that the internet is a community and it is about free access to information / media without borders. Then again, I do understand that you can't expect to get everything for free - someone has to pay to produce all this media and the people who make it do need to get paid for their work.
According to Hollywood and the Music industry it doesnŽt matter whether its available in your country or not or even if its even printed anymore.
If you download it and doesnŽt pay for it you are stealing and deserv nothing but to be put in jail and get a ticket for 10 times as much as the original would have cost.
Now as i have said before this is a new millennium and you canŽt apply the same rules in this one as you previously could.
Yes neither tv, radio, video nor tape became the death of anything but it did bring changes with it.
Now in my politic there are certain things that piss me off and then i use download gladly.
First of is the absolutely stupid habit of releasing a movie several months AFTER its has premiered in America or other countries.
Lets take Hellboy 2 Denmark (where i live) didnŽt get it before THREE months after it had been released in America.
Now i would gladly have paid to see it in the cinemas if they had released it simultaneously world wide.
BUT they didnŽt as such i said fuck it, I donŽt want to wait 3 months to watch a movie, especially not if i can watch it now and if that means downloading it well SO BE IT.
And so i did, same with a lot of other movies that has been getting the same treatment.
Then of course there are the different tv shows that newer gets aired here in Denmark well i happen to love Doctor Who and i watched it (season 1 of the new series) even though it came VERY LATE at night.
But when it wasnŽt followed up by season 2 i said well screw yourself then iŽll download it instead.
Same with a lot of other series out there well i donŽt want to wait for it to be shown here in Denmark if it ever will be.
Now we have music and games first of if it isnŽt sold in dansih stores and i want it well iŽll download it same with games.
Now i know thereŽs something called Amazon but the extra moneys i need to pay for it to be send to where i live means that it isnŽt exactly something iŽm doing a lot in.
Okay now that this little rant is over weŽll go to the result of downloading.
Will it kill of the movie, game and music industry not very likely.
Will it change it YES thatŽs VERY likely to happen, what might one of the changes be? Well Lately the feeling iŽve been getting from both game, movie and often music industry is that it has become quantity over quality.
Hollywood and all the other giants out there seems to have become more interested in money rather then actual quality as lot of what is released is garbage sure they might suit for a quick entertainment here and there but nothing more really.
What downloading might force the game, music and film industry is to make movies people actually WANT to see and pay to see.
Same could be the chase when the movies are released on DVD and such.
Sure you can release "just" the movie but then again why not just download it instead youŽll be getting the same OR you can release the DVD with a lot of extra material and such.
So that it is well instead of just the movie youŽll also get this and this ohh and this.
The music industry has begun to learn this by realizing that people who just want the music will properly just download it and be done with it, to buy the Cd youŽll have to get a little something extra like a booklet with live shoots of the band maybe that live cd doesnŽt "just" have the sound track from that concert but also the dvd with the concert on.
All in all Downloading is here to stay it wonŽt go away, you can try to place restrictions on it, but honestly most guys with half a braincell out there will either find a way or hear of a way to bypass those restrictions without getting captured or anything like that.
All in all its a question of the media industry either adapting or dying there is no middle road here.
The media industry definitely needs to adapt to changes in technology. I think they're getting some of it right with services like Itunes - selling things directly online.
But there does need to be a bigger change.
As for things being delayed / not released in certain places, there are arguments for that.
Europe usually suffers the most from delays because of localisation.
Before a game comes out here it's usually translated into at least 3 or 4 languages (usually more). That doesn't just affect the software but also things like packaging and printing instruction manuals.
This is can push things back by a lot (I think Super Smash Brothers Brawl was at least 5 or 6 months after America).
As for games / movies that are never released, I think the reason for that is because there isn't enough demand - it's not worth the cost of releasing it because not enough people want it.
This is where there definitely needs to be a change. If there's not a lot of demand for something, that doesn't matter to an online release - put it online so it's available to those who want it. Even if only a minority want it at least it will be available for them.
But I think things are definitely improving. Europe was really bad for games back in the 80's/90's. Games like Mario RPG and the Final Fantasy series were not released here at all and Movies were usually delayed by a long time - this still happens but it's still common to have a worldwide release sometimes.
Actually, Japan has it really bad for movies - sometimes an American movie won't come out until many months after the rest of the world.
But things are definitely changing for the better (just slower than I'd hope)
Sony are in talks to stream full movies on YouTube. I don't know a lot about it but if it's free and worldwide it's definitely a step in the right direction - allowing people to see these movies streamed online and have it fully paid for by advertising. If you like a movie and want a higher quality version, you can always buy a disc release to support it. _________________ http://www.what-song.net http://www.rogershanks.com

Exactly to people who just want to see the movie and doesnŽt much about quality (hey lets face it much of the pirated stuff isnŽt exactly HD quality) well here you go you can just watch it.
If you want extra material higher quality and crisp sound well buy the DVD.

Well in Denmark (properly Ireland too canŽt say) most of the manuals to the games thats meant for people above the age of 12 is in English anyway same with the subtitles and everything else.
So i would say well if you mean for the game to go World wide do all the translating BEFORE you release it OR like the movies you could do this.
Put it up on your website for download, sure the only manual youŽll ever see is a PDF document, but if thats what you want well go ahead you pay for the game online and download it.
And should the game be lost well just resend the code you where given and youŽll get a new copy of the game.
By doing that well you will be able to do away with all the packaging printing and so forth, that would save you a few bugs here and there, and make it cheaper.
Again yes i could download it if all i want is the game, however if i also want a cool art book and crisp box art and lot of extra goddess iŽll have to buy the game in the store and pay a little extra.
So if it was up to me that would be how things where done, reward the people who actually buy the game in the boxes donŽt just treat them like nobody's and say well hereŽs the game now cough up with the money pal.
ThatŽll be 500kr 50 dollars or what ever the games might cost.
