I very much enjoy Super Paper Mario and Excitetruck. I have to get around to finishing both. I'm pretty far in both titles though. _________________ Now you can become a fan of The Retro Machine on Facebook. Curious to see how it is. I'll probably never get around to playin it, though. _________________ John R. Gibson

tis quite amusing actually, especially since if you play it b y yourself you have a computer partner, or you can have some random person you never talkted to before from new zealand join your game over live, and turn it into co-op campaign mode, and when they leave, it reverts back to single player campaign _________________
Since I got a Nintendo DS last week I've been rocking a few quick games. I just beat Sonic Rush which was good classic Sonic fun (honestly I think the franchise should just stick to these kind of games and give up on the 3D stuff because it's not working. I would love to play some new low budget 2D sonic games available on WiiWare or XBLA just like Mega Man 9 or something). Started on Sonic Rush Adventure which is equally as fun, though I could do without the long-winded boring cut scenes. I laughed at some of the training aspects in the beginning. It was like "to run right...press RIGHT on the D-Pad!" Ohhhh! Is THAT how you go right? Never would have guessed.
I also beat New Super Mario Bros. which was a great return to classic style Super Mario. A very quick play though. I wish it was a least as big as Super Mario World. I started on Yoshi's Island DS as Yoshi's Island on SNES is one of my favorite Mario games. So far it's very nice. The music is boring compared to the first one though (the SNES one had some of my favorite Mario music).
I've also been TRYING to play Contra 4. This game is very awesome but I can't even get past the second level. This is old school Contra right here and either I suck at it now (and I beat the original Contra as a kid without using the Konami Code) or this game is hard as balls. Probably a little of both. Good times nonetheless.
I also picked up Final Fantasy III and IV DS remakes. Never played any of these when they first came out so I figured I'd try out what are supposed to be the "definitive versions." I also got Chrono Trigger DS. Always been one of my favorite RPGs but I haven't played it since the SNES days. This is also supposed to be a "definitive version." And last but not least I picked up the new Suikoden Tierkreis game. As a new Suikoden fan I had to get this. Didn't even need to read any reviews, but I hear it's getting good reviews. I'll probably start on this in about a week when I have more free time. _________________
I'm not a big fan of Sonic Rush. It just didn't feel right - there were too many bottomless pits and the game played itself far more than most Sonic games. It was kind of cheap (Not in the good Mega Man, trial and error style) - it didn't feel like a platformer at all. Also there were almost no enemies in the levels for some reason.
This is coming from a big old-school Sonic fan (seriously my life can be divided up into two substantial parts; times when I'm playing Sonic 3 and times when I'm not).
Still, I should go back and play it again. If you enjoyed it maybe I missed something. I might revisit it.
I did like New Super Mario Bros but the control didn't feel as tight as the old NES and SNES games. Because they incorporated a lot more moves (some of the jumps from the 3D games) the control feels a lot looser and floaty. It was a little too easy and didn't deliver the really tight run and jump platforming I wanted.
I would like to see a New Super Mario Bros. 2 though, especially if they used sprites instead of 3D models.
Me, I've been playing Alex Kidd in Miracle World. I've never played a Master System game before but I've heard good things about it. It's dated a lot but in context of the time it was made, it is okay. _________________ http://www.what-song.net http://www.rogershanks.com
^All of your complaints about the first Sonic Rush are legit. It certainly is a very speedy game and doesn't have as many platforming elements as the original Genesis games but it doesn't play itself like a lot of the 3D Sonic games do. I thought it was okay in that aspect. The bottomless pits were a problem and to me enemy placement was a problem since you'd be encouraged to go really fast and then all of a sudden an enemy pops up and hits you. But overall I still thought it was a fun game, but I probably liked the Sonic Advance games better.
I finished Sonic Rush Adventure last night and it was a big improvement in most of your complaints (if you thought the first Sonic Rush played itself too much then not much has changed here). There are far less bottomless pits and cheap deaths, enemies are placed better. There are also a lot of added things that I enjoyed like traveling to various islands on different vehicles and controlling them with the stylus. There was a jet ski that let you just zoom through and do various tricks to gain boost to go faster and run through enemies. There was a big ship with different weapons like a gun, cannon and flame thrower. There was a hover craft that let you do spins to deflect enemy fire as well as its own gun. And there was a submarine that let you fire torpedoes at enemies with the right timing of a stylus click. And you'd have to use these various vehicles depending on how you draw your route to your next location. There would be different things blocking your path that only certain vehicles could get through. It was a nice little addition that I found to be fun.
The boss battles were pretty easy but I thought they were even more interesting than the first Rush game. One of my favorites was a huge robotic fish that would open its mouth and you'd have to run into it and run through a mini stage a few times to hit its core before time ran out.
Negatives about the game include the annoying little cutscenes with probably my least favorite new Sonic character yet -- Marine the Raccoon. Oh MAN was she annoying and they made her talk with an Australian accent so all of her text was just a chore to read. There was also some pirate enemies who also talked with annoying Pirate slang. So between having to read Marine and the Pirates' dialogue, it nearly drove me up a wall. As for the story, I'm not sure where they were going with it but to be honest I barely even paid attention to it. I mean, Sonic doesn't need a storyline. I just need to be kicking Eggman's ass all over the place and that should be the bottom line.
Another negative is having to replay levels a bunch of times in order to get the materials you needed in order to build new vehicles. That got annoying quickly and it was just a cheap way to lengthen the game. _________________

That was my first Master System game other than Hang-On and Safari Hunt, which came with the system. I still catch myself humming the music from the title screen.
It was a neat little platformer. Forest level kicked my ass back in the day. _________________ "One of God's own prototypes. Too weird to live, too rare to die." --Hunter S Thompson Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Yeah Alex Kidd in Miracle World was the Sega Master System game to have back in the day. I became a big Alex Kidd fan, and as great as the original was, the sequel was an absolute mess. I've actually been contemplating lately whether or not to tackle Alex Kidd 1&2 as a sort of combined mini review or something like that. _________________ Now you can become a fan of The Retro Machine on Facebook. Well if you want interesting characters or story in a Final fantasy game i would say go for Final Fantasy VII.
It has the best story with excellent twist and turns sure its PS1 graphic but hey who cares about mediocre graphic when the gameplay and story is great.
I would however advise you to stay away from FF XI (unless you want to play online) and FFXII it has the worst story ever and has very little in form of character development and plot.
Without saying to much something happens in the first few hours of the game that really makes the main characters continual involvement completely pointless.

I generally don't care for anything Final Fantasy, but FF7 is the most important RPG in history. It launched the RPG craze that is still going strong.
It was an amazing game and I still love it. Most RPGs make me homicidal because of the cutesy anime characters, nonsensical stories, and repetitious dialogue ("Here's the 87th time we've established this plot point!").
But FF7 still rocks. Can't believe there's been no remake..... _________________ "One of God's own prototypes. Too weird to live, too rare to die." --Hunter S Thompson Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Man oh man I finally got past the second level of Conta 4. Now I can make it to level 4 without any trouble. Now I'm stuck on level 4 lol. Can't get past that freakin' flying rocket bit. Gotta be so precise in your jumping AND watch your back from coming projectiles. This game is a beast. And I love it.
As for Final Fantasy, I haven't played any of them except for 8 and the first disc on 9. 8 was my first ever. Most people seem to dislike it but I enjoyed it a lot, probably because it was my first. And I never finished 9. I didn't really form much of an opinion on it.
I'll play FF7 one day.
I got 3 and 4 for DS so I'll probably play those first. _________________
Finally made it up to level 7 in Contra 4. Not too much longer until I'm able to beat it. As a test I went back to play the original Contra on the NES and I ended up beating it on my first try without using a continue and without using the Konami code. First time I've beaten that game without the Konami code since I was a kid, and I don't think I've ever done it without using a continue before lol. Contra 4 is intense training. *nods*
I also picked up and started playing Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure which is an interesting hybrid of platforming and puzzle gaming. It's mostly a platformer but you'll have to stop and go into the "puzzle realm" in order to stop enemy blocks from making their way into your realm and causing you trouble. You can also get powerups, health, and other things depending on what's in the puzzle. The storyline is awesomely ridiculous. You're an old English man who has to get this golden suit which has the power to close the puzzle realm. All the while you have this other tea drinking villian who wants to get it before you. So you go out, find the first piece of the suit which is the golden hat and it makes you younger. You also have the ability to get into a giant robot and reek havoc on everything by shooting lasers andjet fists and missiles all over. The game is wacky. It's good fun
