Wow! Dragon's Lair on Sega CD sucks

I gave it a chance, cause based on Shane Monroe's praises about (the original) Dragons Lair, I felt I should give it a try, at least for the show. Well, I figure the Nintendo or Super Nintendo version wouldn't work, cause...you know...it's not the original. But I remember many many years ago, renting the Sega CD version, and just thinking "I can't play this. This is horrible." I didn't understand the concept back then. Still have trouble.

I started playing the Sega CD version again. First off, all the video is grainy as sh*t. I mean it's like taking the original games, their cutscenes, and converting it to a real player file of the worst freaking quality. Second, I generally suck at this game, cause I don't know at what point do you swing your sword, or swerve to the left, or whatever. The screen flashes, yes, but I don't react fast enough to execute the necessary move (going to the room on the right, avoiding other dangers, so forth).

Needless to say, I didn't get very far. Took me 10 minutes to get past the broken drawbridge, and that's after consulting a strategy guide.

I am not putting down Dragon's Lair in general, cause I think it's a great concept. I applaude the creators, animators, etc. But it just doesn't work on anything else other than the original arcade.

May just review the Sega CD version of Dragons Lair in a future episode. We'll see.

Know what you mean. I've downloaded a dragon's lair version to play on the pc. It looks great and you really want to play it but it isn't your tipical videogame. You just have to know beforehand what you have to do on each screen and have lightning reflexes. I too went to gamefaqs.com .... Smile

I did play a similar game on the philips cdi (know that "console"?) It plays with a remote control like the wii i think and playing with a remote plays very relaxed i must say. The cdi game was equally frustrating as DL though...

Phillips? Yeah, they had Hotel Mario on that system. Wish I had a chance to take a look at it. Is there an emulator out there for it? A decent one?

There is a dutchman that created a payable version but i tried some games in the demo mode but they didn't work properly. For the rest i haven't found a decent one. I guess the system isn't as popular as the snes or something.

Maybe they're hocking it on Ebay at a fair price. I considered getting the real systems off of there, like Colecovision and Turbografx 16. Think it'd be nice to own the systems, if I had a place for them.

Do you like sonic the hedgehog, or any other things relating to this topic?
John Gibson

Answered your question in the appropriate thread. Feel free to create your own thread for Sonic, if you'd like. I'm sure there's folks out there who share your appreciation for the character, and would voice their opinions.

And welcome to the forums!

The only good ports of 'Dragon's Lair', and 'Space Ace' that are worth owning are the DVD releases from Digital Leisure. They're basically transfers from the original film prints onto DVD, and the Laserdisc was the precurser to DVDs when you think about it. The DVDs have some nice extras like interviews from Don Bluth, Rick Dyer, John Pomeroy, and Gary Goldman. You can play them on any DVD player, or on consoles that support DVD playback. Highly recomended. Here's a link to Digital Leisure's site.
