WMAC MastersI think we should remember WMAC Masters (tacitly hosted by Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee's daughter). It was a Martial Arts version of WWE (but less fake). It was soap opera-ish, but it featured every known martial art from Karate to lesser know martial arts. The WMAC episodes actually had plot in between (and sometimes in) the matches. It was fun to watch. Ho Sung Pak was the only known actor at the time on the show (He was Raphael in the TMNT movies).

I used to watch that show back in the day. Good times. Calling it "less fake" than the WWE is kind of an odd statement though. WMAC masters was 100% scripted and the fights were 100% choreographed to the point where they don't even touch each other. While the matches in the WWE may have a predetermined ending, they do actually make contact with each other when they fight, albeit they hold back so as not to hurt each other too badly. They "blade" to bleed (using a razor blade to cut open a small wound in the forehead), take real chair shots, fall off ladders, through tables, slams on steel ramps, etc. And aside from a few big spots that need to be planned, the matches, for the most part, are created on the fly by the performers. It's called ring psychology, which is knowing how to work a match and tell a story in the ring. It's far more "real" than anything seen on WMAC masters.
Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. heh

I have to agree with KT, pro wrestling is predetermined and scripted, but these dudes are really whaling on each other like 60% of the time. you can see the punches and such are obviously fake, but the drops and holds and shit? real. It's their reactions that are exaggerated. (somehow these people want you to believe that if you climb up on a turnbuckle and elbow drop, and land on a muscular man, you'll be okay, but if he rolls aside and you land on a soft springy mat, you'll be knocked silly.)

Haha, yeah there's a lot of weird contradictions in wrestling. Like someone getting a big kick in the face will only take them out for about 10 seconds and they'll be able to continue the match, but if someone gets hit by a boot by someone swinging it with their hands, it will pretty much knock them out cold.
But hey, it's all about suspension of disbelief, just like any other TV show. =P
The punches and stuff aren't totally fake either. They're always making contact with the other performer, it's just that the punches/kicks etc. are pulled so they don't make full impact. Anytime the workers don't make contact with a punch or kick is a f*ck up.
