Video Masters TV- Season 2, Episode 10- May 2008

Hey, only 4 or 5 days late this time.

We'll be reviewing Beneath the Planet of the Apes, as well as taking a look at the complete mini series of Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash. There's also Part 2 of our Play View to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES, a few game reviews, plus a major story arc in this episode

Shocked What a twist ending, are you trying to beat out Mr. Shamaladingdong?
John Gibson

ROFL, I read this originally at work, and I was trying to hold back laughing my ass off at that comment.

Yeah, I love those cliffhanger endings where you have to wait until the next season to find out what's going to happen.
Galaxy_Stranger

aHAH!

Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D is NOT the first "live-action digital 3D movie".

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, if not the first, definitely preceded Journey from 2004.  Angelina Jolie was innit.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0346156/

Great show, as always.

Now, where's the next show?

emmm....why does Earl have boobiez?

Don't tell me, tell the trailer that. That's what they put, man.

Next show is August 22nd.

LOL Earl's boobies!! Love it! Dunno, just put a bunch of crap on him, push pins, little stickers, all kinds of crap.

This is quite interesting.  I think this lends itself into a new exploration into Earl's sexuality.
John Gibson

So funny, I was talking to my girlfriend about Earl's voice changing in Season 3, and I joked and said "he should sound like the performance artist in Family Guy"
John Gibson

Just a quick heads up for those who clicked the Google link. It only plays 2 minutes of it. Couldn't figure that out. I waited 2 hours for that to upload. So I'm trying it again.

Great Episode.

I agree with you about the video game movies but for some reason I don't want them to stop trying. Most video game movies are disasters but the same was true of Comic Book movies a few years ago. Anything that wasn't Superman or Batman (and even a few that were Batman) were mangled in the transition to film. Look at them now. Sure there are a few turkey's but overall filmakers are putting the work in to make decent movies. Someday, they might do the same for games.
(Also, I have a really epic idea for a Mega Man II script I want to write).

Loved watching you play the Ninja Turtles game. I never got further than the driving level. You had it easy on the NES, though. We had it on commodore though, so we didn't even have a proper controller, just a flight-stick which really doesn't belong to that type of game.

What's wrong with The Spirit trailer? I agree with you about the music and the incest and stuff but I have no problem with the visual style. Film's aren't supposed to look like real life. They're supposed to be stylised and abstracted.

Great ending. The production quality in those sequences is really great.

As always, you've made another swell episode. Using Earl, and DUKE for the 'cliffhanger' was a very nice touch. That poster with Ron Jeremy, and Jack Black as our favorite plumbers had me in stitches. Laughing I agree that it's gonna take a while before Hollywood, and the game companies figure out how to bring game properties to the screen. Marvel has pretty much set the standard for adapting comics into movies, so at least they're doing something right. Personally, i think Mario, Sonic, and Pac-Man should get animated movies because the cartoon medium works best for them. Unfortunately, Hollywood still sees animation as 'kids stuff', and in order for them to get the big box office numbers. they must either be in the 'Disney Princess' formula, the 'Shrek' formula, or the 'live action SFX bonanza' formula in order for these execs to plunk down 20 million dollars for said films. (In other words, the execs are lazy, and are unwilling to take a chance on something different from the norm.) I'd also like to see the 'Rolling Thunder', and 'Final Fight' made into movies, but those games aren't that well known, and they would probably end up being terrible in the wrong hands.

You know - I've completely given up on franchise adaptations - video games or otherwise.  Frankly, I'm just not impressed with super-hero track records.

Superman 1&2 were good - none of the others are worth the time or money, not even that new peice of crap they came out with.

Spiderman was good, Spiderman 2 less so.  Spiderman 3 was a complete abortion.

X-Men was fair, X-Men 2 was O.K. and X-Men 3 was a complete waste of my money; I nearly walked out on it.

Start to see the same trend I do?

Hulk:  Angle Lee?  Sweet Jesus - are you KIDDING ME!?!?  The new one is such an obvious reboot and superficial copy of the TV show that I'm completely uninterested in it.

Batman - Tim Burton is Satan.  I DID, however like the new Christian Bale version that came out and look forward to the next one.

I haven't even bothered to see Fantastic 4.  I'm not even going to count the many aborted or straight-to-video Marvel titles such as Punisher or the ever-elusive Fantastic 4 movie that got made, but never released.

Iron Man, on the other hand, knocked it out of the park.  So that's...8 super-hero movies in the last THIRTY YEARS that I'd consider buying on DVD.

For me, franchise films from Aliens to Predator to Star Trek aren't even worth checking out until someone I know has rented it.  And even then, I've wasted so much of my life in front of bad movies and tv shows that there has to be some real incentive to do that.
Galaxy_Stranger

Ok - American Gladiators has a Hulk endorsement.

It's official - the Hulk will SUCK.

I can kind of see your point. I do consciously avoid movie franchises unless it's something I really like. For instance, I have very little time for James Bond. If there's a James Bond movie on TV, I'll avoid it (although I will admit Casino Royale was a great movie). I also avoided Serenity because I hadn't seen the TV show.

Still, I don't think it's right to completely avoid franchise movies because you really are missing out on some good stuff.

From your examples, I'd consider Aliens and Star Trek II a couple of the greatest films ever made. But then again, I'd consider Star Trek V and Alien Vs. Predator, two of the worst films ever made. The problem with a popular movie franchise is that you invariably get more bad movies than good ones because it's more of a business than it is art.

One of the few exceptions to that is actually Planet of the Apes. The only one I really don't like is Escape from the Planet of the Apes. The rest of them are all really good and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is my overall favourite. It's one of the few times, when I can say that the third sequel to a great movie is my favourite in the series.

I know I'm jaded.  But I agree with John when he said that Hollywood keeps changing our childhood.  Just look at George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.  - don't even get me started on "The Crystal Horseshit".  That abortion was the biggest waste of talent since Transformers.

I'm sick of these freaking reboots like Battlestar.  Don't create some gay drama in space and slap the word "Battlestar" on it and tell me it's the same show.  It's nothing but a ploy to sucker people in - and they buy it.

And the new thing is they'll start script writing and lie about who's going to be cast.  I've seen more than one company do this - and each and every time they end up with crappy tv actors.

I'm just sick of it.

It's funny, I met Chase Masterson at the Comic Con yesterday. Asked her what her favorite TV show was. She said Battlestar Gallactica. I said "old one or new one?". She said "old one". Though she seems to like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the old one", to which I replied "Oh, Willy Wonka, yeah".

Hope it didn't look like I was staring at her massive cleavage the whole time like all the other guys were. hehe. Wink

Ok - no pics??!!  ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!??  JESUS!!!

Yeah, sounds like she's just been programmed to say, "old one" any time someone asks her anything.

Alright - now everyone has to begin submitting their "Chase Masterson's cleavage and Me" photos.
John Gibson

I think I got a quickie shot of her in my little tour of the con. I'll have to check the tape for that one. Guess you'll find out in Season 3.

John Gibson

ROFL, I'm sure the Big Apple Con folk will have video up long before I do. I'm subscribed to them, so if I see someone interview her, I'll link you up.

Actually, when I asked her if she'd like to be on the show, she gave me the old "have your people call my people".

I agree. The first two 'Superman' movies were the best. The rest of the films made afterwards, not so much. Which is a shame because Superman still has great potential as a movie franchise, and out side of Bruce Timm's animated universe, Warner Bros. still continues to screw him up.

Galaxy_Stranger wrote:

The first two movies were decent enough. I'm still on the fence with the third one. (Don't even get me started on Bryant Singer's departure from the 'X-Men' series, and turning Superman into a deadbeat dad who stalks women!)

Galaxy_Stranger wrote:

Agreed. I'm sure Ang Lee meant well, and the CGI work on The Hulk was about as good as one could expect, but the overall film was a slow, confusing mess. Here's hoping that this new film will remedy this, but you never know.

Galaxy_Stranger wrote:

Me, too! Christopher Nolan did the impossible by making a Batman movie that's actually engaging, and treats him as a character. Something the other movies could not accomplish.
Erikjust

Nice episode though you left an opening in your statement about video games converted to movies, that could bring back the threat you deleted.

You should perhaps have said that: they will NEVER get it right. Instead you said that: "Hollywood will never get it right".

Well Hollywood is an American company American not European, Asian or Japanese.

I donīt know if youīve seen the Final Fantasy movie Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children.

But i think that movie is one of the closest things we will get to a game more or less faithful converted into a movie.

Sure you might argue that the movie is a sequel to the game itīs based on but still.

So while America might still be stuck in the stone ages when it comes to converting video games into movies, Japan seems to be close on the path of getting it RIGHT.

The first two where great the new one okay it could have been A LOT bette.
Before anyone start blaming the fans for this mess, let me just put in that most fans actually called out for a restart not a continuation.
Which is in a way understandably, since nobody could replace Reeve as Superman.
So i think they should have just restarted the whole thing

I had some problems whit the costumes not being loyal to the series, but i got over it, and i must say it worked great in the first two movies.
Your opinion on the third one, well lets just say you got my full support, that movie was a disaster of epic proportions

I never watched the show only read the comic and as such the movie failed completely too.
It could have been better David Hayter the guy who voiced Snake in metal gear solid and wrote the screen play in Ironman also wrote one too the Hulk movie however his script was dumped and another guy took over.
The result well we all know what the result was.

Now there i disagree whit you, i loved the first two batman movies from Tim Burton, they where every bit as great as what was needed for people to start taking superhero movies serious.
Batman begins was great too and in a way did the same for Batman as Burtons movies did.

I am surprised that we havenīt mentioned to other crappy movies.

Deardevil: story umm donīt tell please i know what it is hmm i got it just on my tung i just canīt quite remember what the meaning of words story and plot is OR ACTING for that matter.
That movie is only watchable in directors cut, from what i have read there should actually be something that resembles a story and plot in that version.

Transformers: no not the old cartoon movie that one rocked, even though some call it a toy commercial in movie length i still like it.
No the crap i am talking about is the new one the one Bay directed.
lets just sum up where it went WRONG!!!!!!: not that solid of a plot, other then Peter Cullen as prime not a whole lot of acting in the movies and most of the humans in it seemed to have an IQ of 3.
Lousy designs okay i know that there need to be some realism but this is crap all the way and they are quite ugly too.

You're dead right about Japan. They've been successfully adapting comics and games for years. Just look at movies like the Lone Wolf and Cub series or Lady Snowblood. Not only are they high quality movies but they are also incredibly close to the source material. Street Fighter, the animated movie was amazing and I've heard good things about the Gungrave TV Show.

I know John didn't want examples of stuff that's good. That's no excuse for all the crud that makes up the majority of this stuff. My point is that in Japan, comics, cartoons, video games, are taken seriously - they are not treated as Kid's stuff and are therefore treated as seriously when adapted. That's something that is only starting to happen in the West now.

Also speaking of David Hayter, I heard he wanted to write a Metal Gear Solid movie. He's a good writer and definitely has an investment in the series. That movie would be amazing. That's what you need, somebody who actually cares about the story and the characters working on the movie. Also, after seeing him on the Bonus Round on GameTrailers, I don't think it would be a huge stretch for him to play Snake, even in live-action.

Right after the CheatVault closes, you mosaic from the fedex envelope to you sitting in a chair!!! FUCKING EXCELLENT transition!!!!

How do you do the Comic camera pans? is that an after effects move on the picture or is that you holding a video camera moving around over the comic, if so, pretty dam slick moves there bro!

You added a bitch and fucker to the ATTRACT MODE 3D intro!!!!!!!!!! SWEEET!!! nice game cabs there son!

I enjoyed the TMNT playview!!! It got a bit long tho....Wink

i love the LANDING of the Duke n Earl ship and Earl falls!!!! ROFL! Great ending to the scene there man.... love it

EDIT: for all of you out there, when John sends me a script, he sends the whole thing. When I get it, I always just look at DUKE's lines without reading Earl's, that way when the arse finally releases the episode, it will be fresh for me, as it is you folks. Wink

I don't blame you for giving the 'Turtles' game the bird. The arcade games are vastly superior to that game. As for 'World Of Warcraft', you won't be touching that game anytime soon.

Actually, I scanned a few pages from each issue, BIG resolution, so I can pan in or out, and just go across the page. If I had used a camera, I would have gotten a glare or something bad.

Oh, how can you say that?  For the time - and for the size of the franchise - I thought it came out pretty well.  It wasn't the most colorful or the most fun game to play on NES, but I thought it turned out well considering how bad it could have been.

While the NES Turtles Arcade translation was really good, and the original arcade games were really captivating, the first one wasn't a horrible game.  I mean - even I could beat it.

Many of the monsters didn't make any sense, but there was some cool cutscene animation and you could see the effort they made to make it feel like the turtles were "really" ninjas flipping around and using their weapons smoothly.

Nice work, John. Hate we couldn't contribute this month. But now we're getting settled into Virginia and we shall return for season 3.

Groovy. Start brainstormin, buddy. Wink
