There's something about numbers I like. I can't explain. It goes back to my early days of Colecovision, playing Mr. Do!. Getting to higher levels. I'm weird that way.
Anyways, the new episode is coming along fine. Rendering and editing a lot of new animations for the "halfway" season. Live Action (at least on my end) is all recorded, including the opening and closing skit. Hopefully, everything will be done by the time this damn jury duty rolls around. If not, I could work on it at night after the 19th. Rest assured, the show WILL NOT be late.
Oh, and it will be good, too.

I want that Dragon's Lair arcade game!!!!.
JamesJoell
Arkanoid!! Nah man that looks absolutely frickin amazing.
Maybe in the future we could have a render of some stupid idiot playing para para lol.
Are we looking at too late to get some content in for february? If not i'll send something for your consideration, i'll ensure that nothing more than a introduction overlay is required to say who i am.
Let me know as i've got an absolute shedload of freetime over the next 48hrs then none until 10 days time
John Gibson
Yeah, man. Whenever you can get stuff to us. If it doesn't make the Feb show, we'll stick it in March.
JamesJoell
Ok no worries John. I'll get something winged over to you tomorrow afternoon. With a bit of luck it makes the cut as then i can get something fresh to you for March.
I'll PM you with some ideas, i don't wanna do something that's already been done so, check your PM's bud.
John Gibson
Well, to get a feel for how we roll, try checking out as many shows as you can. It will help not to make your first submission a rush job. Not saying you want to spend a whole week on it, but you also want to make sure it's of good quality, and ya don't talk too fast, lol.
Best example I can give you, watch Jason's review to Supreme Commander. He was one of the original VM hosts, so he's got some experience in front of the camera.
JamesJoell
No worries, i've done allot of podcasting and run a few video game related websites & video virals over the last few years, never have the time to both create the videos and run the administration, i've watched 4 episodes today and know exactly what your looking for, so you'll have no worries there.
John Gibson
Ok, good news (I hope). The show is about 70% encoded. I can't guarantee everything will be done tonight, if it is, it'll be late tonight, and you guys might not notice until tomorrow. I don't think we have late night forum lurkers here (Youtube, maybe, hehe).
Stomach still feels odd, but I worked pretty much the whole day to get the episode done. I'm going to take things easy after this, and then finish up the DVD, and then make plans for the March 08 show.
Once the show is on Youtube, I'll post the link, and give you the URL for the download.

Oh NO! Don't you pull that "my stomach hurts" crap on us!
You get my damned show done and you get it done TONIGHT!
John Gibson
Um, what about my dog ate my computer?
84% done. Be patient.
Galaxy_Stranger
I always wanted to ask about that skit early in the show - did someone really hack your computer or was that just for the skit?
John Gibson
Oh, you mean in the first season? No, originally, that was not a skit. At the time, two people I knew got their sites hacked by some immature snotnose pricks. In no particular order, Retro Gaming Radio got their site hacked, and Gamelife got hacked. I know both alumni very well, and this made me mad. So originally, I had planned a rant about people who hack sites to prove a point, but end up showing their immaturity. That idea was scrapped, and I made it into a skit. In no way poking fun at or insulting the parties in question who were hacked.
Any issues or concerns, address to me when you can, though I am WAY too tired to deal with them tonight. I'm going to bed. Hope you guys like the episode.

Great Episode! But it needs more Girls Gone Wild. And you should extend the show to about 3 hours like Shane does.
The Robots were friggin' hillarious! They worked out so well!
I liked the mini review of Dangerous Dave. It hearkens back to Commander Keen and like games. Those were the days...
The comics segment had an interesting flavor. That and Matt's newly-aquired Star Wars collection makes me want to finish my GIJoe, Transformers and Ninja Turtles Collection. And the "Brood" X-Men Comics.
"Beat the Boss" was a real cool idea. This segment would work great for cool little-known games as well.
I loved the Spidey show segment. I've been able to collect a handful of these 60's Spidey and Captain America shows on VHS. I wish they would released them all in a set on DVD. Those and the 80's Spiderman and his Amazing Friends show that eventually added the Hulk.
The Girls Gone Wild "accident" skit was priceless!
While I agree that shows don't have to be violent in order to be entertaining, I have a comment on Kenneth Johnson's letter to you. His reasons for toning down punching make sense to me, and I can understand them. But I don't buy it. Violence was what sold the show and kept people watching in anticipation. Everyone wanted to see the Hulk beat the shit out of someone. Don't Lie. But this is why I call bull shit on Kenneth Johnson: If the violence was such an issue - why did they cut out the intelligence of the Hulk to begin with. It's classic Frankenstein mixed in with Jekyll and Hyde. The Frankenstein monster wasn't mute, child-like or even stupid. And Hyde wasn't just some mega-violent beast without sentient thought. If they had left the Hulk as he was, they would have ended up with a MUCH better drama, they wouldn't have had to worry so much about the violence, (because that's all they left themselves with), and the show would have freaking SURVIVED.
I guess that's why HE-Man never appealed to me when I was a kid. IT WAS ALL A LIE!!! HE-Man was BRISTLING with muscles and...bulges, and yet the show wasn't about violence. Bull shit. The whole point of that show was to attract kids to make their parents buy their shit. And everyone was practically NUDE!!!! Most of them were completely naked except for a Speedo! A SPEEDO IS ALL THAT WAS LEFT!!! DAMN YOU TO HELL, FILMATION!!! DAMN YOU TO HEEEEEEELL!!!
I need to get some ZDoom material together for you. I have Fraps, btw.

Dude, the Hulk series lasted for 5 whole seasons. I think the reason they canceled was cause the stories weren't as good by the 5th season.
I think I have an answer to why the Hulk didn't speak. Mr. Johnson might have felt a talking Hulk "Hulk Smash puny humans" would make the show silly. A non-speaking Hulk gave a sense of raw emotion. You have to admit, if the Hulk went around talking like he did in the comics, and it was on live action TV, you wouldn't take it seriously. Am I right?
launchpad25
Now that was a great episode. Nice update on the intro, and graphics. I'd like to throw in my two cents on the 'role model' subject that was brought up. I agree that today's role models are questionable at best. Today, kids look up to people who are 'rebellious'. People who think that they're 'above the law'. Examples for this include 50 Cent, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan. The media gleefully shoves these questionable 'role models' down our throats as if they were the only ones on earth without realizing that there are better 'role models' out there. However, despite the onslaught of moral decay, Spider-Man is still popular these days, and yes, his recent big screen installment gave me some incentive to cheer for him.
On the subject of cartoons, There's no question about it that the animation world is seriously lacking in good role models. Don't get me wrong, i like cartoons that offer pure humor, but good action cartoons with great role models are very hard to come by these days. Cartoon Network hasn't aired 'Justice League' since 2006, and if there was ever a cartoon that needs to be in heavy rotation, it's this one. 'Teen Titans' gets way too much airtime. Speaking of witch, that brings me to another bothersome trend in TV animation. Alot of cartoons these days feature 'kids' as the main protagonist. The current thinking is that these network execs want to 'relate to kids' so they make these cartoons where kids are causing chaos all the time. Adults are rarely seen on cartoons these days because the execs don't want kids to know what they'll eventually become.
And Disney is extremely guilty of shoving their own manufactured 'attention whore teens' down our throats in the form of garbage like 'Hanna Montana', and High School Musical'. It's almost as if they're ashamed of the fact that they're responsible for Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. (And Uncle Scrooge) The fact that this crap is successful really bothers me, and unless Disney goes back to it's roots an an animation studio, everything that made Disney great in the first place will continue to be lost on today's shallow generation. In response to Disney's current thinking, i made a Flash cartoon mocking their teen crap.
Getting back on the latest episode, i liked the revamp of Big Duke, and Earl. As well as the 'Girls Gone Wild' gag. Hope we'll see more of Duke, and Earl in the future. I also enjoyed the review of 'Elevator Action Returns'. You can get this game on 'Taito Legends 2' for the PS2.
I also enjoyed the topic on TV violence. What's interesting is how Kenneth Johnson chose not to have The Hulk punching people. The idea of him still having Banner's humanity works with his struggle to maintain it in some way. It never ceases to amaze me how some people never learn to observe cartoons, and continue to get them removed from the airwaves so they can plop kids infront of their TV so they can go about their carelessness. Well, that's my two cents.

Ahhh - but I didn't say he'd have to go that route! Check out TNT's version of Frankenstein with Randy Quaid and I think you'll see what I mean. "HULK SMASH!" wouldn't have added anything to the character.

Your Girls Gone Wild face is hilarious! We played that part several times!
Excellent episode as always, my friend. The comic shop stuff turned out really well. It amazes us what you can do with the crappy footage we send you!
Earl the robot got a makeover! He looks great. Funny stuff. I've also been playing Elevator Action Returns. Taito Legends 1 and 2 has been getting a lot of play on the old PS2. I also used to eat 3CPO's! Yep, I was a dork even at age 7.
I liked your talk about "heroes". I think that parents should strive to be their kid's heroes and if ya don't have kids (like me), you should be your own hero.
Excellent work, man.

Oh yeah, Quackshot was easily one of the best Genesis games ever. I really loved that one back in the day. This coming from someone who hates Disney characters (I'm a Bugs Bunny man, myself).

Another great show. You never cease to amaze me with your editing skills John.
The whole heroes bit was very true. But we also don't seem to care about anybody else but ourselves. It's become a world of me first...or what's in it for me kind of attitude.
Very rarely will you see anybody help somebody else.
It's gotten so bad that if people see somebody getting beat up or mugged, they don't want to help the victim. They simply don't want to get involved.
It's very sad.
The whole world attitude has changed.I believe the true heroes are the ones risking their lives everyday to help the powerless. The fire fighters, police, doctors etc.
Even WE can be heroes.Just by helping other people we help ourselves in the process.
Changing the subject to something lighter.I have always been a huge fan of Buffy.I definately found the whole Buffy bit interesting.I never knew that there were Buffy comics out there, that actually continued the story from where the series ended.
I might have to look into collecting them.
The girls gone wild bit was funny. The look on your face John was priceless.
The only thing i found a little confusing was the robot bit.Was he a character from your earlier vm episodes?.
Anyway great show once again. And the guest reviwers hit a home run once more.
Keep it up guys!.
Now i am off to kill zombies in dead rising.

I have been a big buffy fan for years. After the 7th season ended Joss felt the story was not yet finished. At first he tried gathering the same cast for a movie, but when that fell through he started talking about a comic series that would be season 8 of Buffy the vampire slayer. Now season 9 is in the making. You can check it out at www.buffyworld.com. Also the Laurell K Hamilton comic book series is great. Her novels are even better!

The robot, Earl, comes from a separate bit that John made called 'Video Masters Flashback'.
Don't laugh...but i was just trying out quackshot on a genesis emulator, and i can't even get past the first level.I am up to the bit where a dog says to me ,"you are going to need some equipment to reach higher areas " or something like that.
A green flag is placed on the ground. And that's it!!!.I am stuck.I can't climb the next wall. What do you do?.

For some reason i didnīt like this episode, it seemed rushed, and unsorted like it was just slapped together by various clips that didnīt make it in the other episodes.

You have to shoot the plungers into the wall them jump on them. Shoot and jump! You'll use that a lot in Quackshot.

Understandable. I was hoping to make it longer, possibly an hour, but we were short on time, and I had taken ill, and I was waiting on other submissions, which you'll see in March. A Play View was scheduled, but hard to edit together, so I skipped it. We were running late, but I wanted to get the show out, so to some, it may seem like a rush job. We'll make up for it.

While I'll agree until the cows come home that cartoons need better heroes, I'm not so wild about saying that the amount of violence dictates how good a show is. Dungeons & Dragons was by far and away the most violent thing CBS aired in the '80s (thanks in no small part to the disgusting edits that pervaded the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour at the time), and it had an unshakable moral core (and the heroes-save Bobby and Uni, of course-were teenagers!). Likewise, the best episodes of He-Man, She-Ra, G.I. Joe, et al tended to be the most violent: "The Problem With Power" dealt with He-Man "killing" a man. "The Price of Freedom" dealt with war head-on. G.I. Joe's best tended to explore either major character death or the satirical limits of the FOOG (Friends Of Old Gerber, to steal a phrase from Mark Evanier).
My point is, it's not about the violence. It's about the writing. And in today's age, when the networks and toy companies exert excessive control on the creative process (much like in the '70s, a famous dry era for quality animation), it's no shocker that most cartoons are lacking in that undefinable element that makes them transcend the ages: a soul.
John Gibson
I agree. The writing of a series, or an episode is one of the important aspects of what makes a show or an episode great.
The whole point of the Grumble and Glorify bit on Non-violent shows was not to bash the shows that were violent (cause I loved Looney Tunes), it was to point out that people who tried to censor some of these shows were wrong.
And of course, when I said that "the last person a kid should admire is a teenager", I, of course meant a modern day teenager. I mean if as a kid you looked up to one of the Goonies, that's fine, hehe. And weren't the heroes in Voltron, teenagers? So yeah, teens in the 80's were fine, but today's teens? Absolutely not.
Thanks for your input, I hope I didn't cause confusion in the segment. Nowadays, some people seem to think in order for a show they watch today to be entertaining, it HAS to be violent.
Thanks again, and welcome to the forums.

I agree. Some shows have violence, and some don't . It all come down to how well it's executed, and the classic cartoon of the past have very well executed violence that's also funny, too. Which is why they're so great.

I'll say. These 'teen idols' like Zac Effron, and Miley Cirus are so fake, shallow, and fruity that your quote about 'idolizing teenagers' makes a whole lot of sense. We definitely had better teen idols in the 80's. Though, we did have 'New Kids On The Block'. (shudder) Oh well, not every decade was perfect.
John Gibson wrote:

I think that most people think that just because they're 'pushing the envelope' that they're making a more 'cutting edge' show . Sometimes throwing in violence just for the sake of it can be a bad idea.
Splodge
Sorry, I'm late. I know the show's been up a few days but I've been crazy busy.
Great show. Probably the best yet. Excellent work on the Intro/Outro. Was it MST3K inspired? It was perfectly put together. I definitely want to see more of those robots in the future. (Do I smell a spinoff?).
On the subject of heroes, I think it's okay to have a teenager for a hero. I was a fairly anxty kid (still am sometimes and I'm nearly 23), so it's cool to see guys like Peter Parker - someone who's kind of awkward and overly emotional but still knows how to bring the best out of himself as Spider-man.
Then again, there are guys like He-man. He's a good hero-model, but it's something almost unachievable. I think someday I could be like Spider-man but I don't know if I could ever be like He-man. But it's something to aim for I suppose.
I liked the Beat the Boss segment. I had a feeling it would be a Metroid game.
It might be cool in the future to pick just one boss battle, though - something epic. I liked the remixed music.
It might be cool to use remixed sound effects and sync them up with the game. I don't know if that's a good idea but it's a suggestion.
I'm definitelty going to check out that GraveSlinger comic. It sounds right up my alley. The whole comic segment was pretty good. You guys are doing great - it was a lot more polished than last time.
Overall great episode. I'll definitely try to contribute soon (I've been saying that for a while but I promise it will happen soon).
