Video Masters TV- Episode 17- January, 2008

Don't get excited, everyone. Show isn't out yet. Episode 16 hasn't even collected dust, yet. I just created this topic to keep up abreast on what's happening as far as progress.

Without saying too much, I will say review #1 is nearing completion. From the beta I put together (from the original file sent to me), it looks awesome!

I guarantee you fans of the show will throw up your hands and shout "Hallelujah". A final touch is needed to the review, and we're all set.

Two Grumble and Glorify reviews are scheduled for a review. I think I have the Mini-Reviews selected, and things are moving along nicely for the January show, even though January itself has not arrived yet. May get the show earlier than expected, but don't hold your breath.
Galaxy_Stranger

Alright - January's here.  Where's my goddamned episode?
John Gibson

Uhh, it's in my pants, huh huh huh. Heh heh heh.

Let's give the last episode time to collect dust. Things are being written. We've given you an idea of what to expect. New stuff mixed with the old. Balanced like a hearty breakfast.

We think you'll like it.
Galaxy_Stranger

I'm just kidding.

But I don't cotton to hardy breakfastes.  I'll have none of THAT!
John Gibson

Not much of a breakfast person, eh? Well, luckily that's not served with this episode. We'll throw in a candy bar.
Galaxy_Stranger

That's better.
John Gibson

Did some re-filming today. For some reason, lighting is difficult for me to learn, hehe. But I think I got it under control, and re-shot some stuff, and filmed new stuff.

Next I gotta record some more games, voiceover. I'm expecting some "extra" material to come my way soon. The show should go up in a week or so.

Meanwhile...

Christwagons - is that legal?
John Gibson

Is what? All the characters appearing on the poster? Well, no one has sued yet, so..
Galaxy_Stranger

Good point...
John Gibson

When I made the "Toss it" shirt, the Zazzle site wouldn't publish it cause the original cartridge my toon self was holding said "Atari ET". So I blurred out the pic, and changed the cartridge around a bit. They wouldn't allow copyright infringement.

Next promotional piece will come in February. You guys will like it.
Galaxy_Stranger

"Toss it", hmmm?   the wheels are turning...

There's gotta be something a la double entendre in there for a shirt ad...
John Gibson

Show may be up either tomorrow, or Sunday.

More later....
Galaxy_Stranger

;lkj;lj

you bastard...
John Gibson

Show is encoding. It's 46% encoded. Still has yet to be uploaded, and I'm not even done revamping the site. I might save that for February (makes more sense to me).

The show may not make it online tonight. May be encoded tonight, but probably uploaded tomorrow morning or night.
John Gibson

Hoooooray!!! It's done.

www.videomasterstv.com/vmtvep17.wmv

Site is not updated, yet. I was working on a site revamp, but can't finish it in time, so I'm gonna have to grab the current site pages up now, and just update those pages.

Freakin sweet, dude! All the guest stars didn't leave much room for you, John! Great episode!!
Splodge

Great Show.
Cool to see some guest stars.

There was alot of great content.

Cool review of Evil Dead. It's one of my favourite films. I think the second one is the best but the first one is a definite classic.

I liked the Baseball review. I agree that sports games are better when they're not so realistic. I still play games like Punch-Out and Super Tennis but I don't think I could get into these new games with photo-realistic models of real players.

I don't think I agree with you about "Speed Racer". The film is going to be terrible but I don't think it should look realistic. The "Speed Racer" cartoon was very stylised with alot of bright colours and the cars were all unnatural shapes. I'm glad they kept that for the movie. It's not realistic but it looks like the cartoon.
The problem I have with it is that they're trying to make it cool (with bright lights, ninja stars and girls and stuff). It's the Wachowski Brothers, so it could go either way (good like "V for Vendetta" [but they only wrote that] or bad like the 2 Matrix Sequels)

Great show. Keep them coming.
launchpad25

Well that was kinda different. I did like the 'media beefs', and i have a few of my own.

'The media seems to be going out of their way to shove tween sitcoms, and tween idols down our throats, and sweep anything else (particularly cartoons) under the rug.' (I'm looking at you, Disney)

If we're not to careful, 'young hollywood starlets' will soon become a 'protected minority group' that's above the law, and will not have to follow the same rule that us commoners have to follow.

'Animation should not just be limited to CGI films. They say that variety is the spice of life, and limiting yourself to one kind of animation will ware thin very quickly.

'If local stations want my viewership back, they need to have something other than courtroom shows, trash talk shows, reality shows, informercials, and sitcoms. If you want to know why cable is beating you in the ratings, i'd suggest looking into your association with the FCC.'

'If a cable network caters to a specific kind of programing, Especially if it's logo is designed to whatever it caters to, it should stay true to it's mission statement, and not veer away from it in any way, shape, or form. You cable networks know who you are, and probably know what i mean by this. (Or maybe not)'

'For you Hollywood studios who are still baffled by the writers strike, there's a little saying in the business world that you should take to heart. 'Sometimes you gotta spend money to make money'. Something to think about.'

And finally...

'Just because a cartoon is legendary, and film making has advanced in the last couple of decades, dosen't mean you can turn a perfectly good cartoon that we all grew up with into a live action trainwreck that'll probably put traditional animators out of work. Some cartoons should stay cartoons, and animators have gotta eat, too.'

Those are my 'media beefs'. What do you think?
Talonluck

Awesome episode. I must say Jason does a great review! I've been curious about that game too.

Nice seeing Matt get a 360. Now he'll have to add me to his friends list on xbox live!
shinmoteuchi

Yey! You're back! Very Happy

I can see new faces in VMTV and I like it a lot! Maybe in future more people will be featured? (for example me ;])

Ow! I'm buying a new PS2. If you want I can make video of openning the new one and kicking the old one. Exclusive for VMTV.

About VF5 On-ZOMG-Line. I was training my self few years ago in VF4 to enter tournaments in Poland, and what I want to say... I know all those combos in every fighter. Ehehehe... Ow, I made few tournaments last year (hi class ones!) and I was shocked who people can kick asses. Maby I should make video of tournaments?
Galaxy_Stranger

Man, this was good.

1.  The skits just keep getting better and better.  Though, I don't think anything will top the "Piss on it" review of Dr.Jekyl and Mr.Hyde.  You know, you could add a new "toss-on-it" status.  yeeeeeewww.

2.  The Top5 was good.  I have to mention, though, that I thought "Knight's Tale" was a great movie - even though I agree that the music kicked me out of the story.

3.  I can see the total cheeze comming out of the Speed Racer trailer, but there are elements that look almost interesting.  But it's hard to tell whether it's trying to be faithful to the show or just pandering like we always get.  I may even see this one at the theatre.

4.  OVERDUB - OVERDUUUUUB!!!!!!!!!  Cool review, though.

5.  Bruce Cambell is so hot...  Awesome addition to the show.

6.  I totally agree that - especially sports games - don't have to be totally realistic to be fun.  But I also believe that the new 3D uber-realism that the new games have is the next logical step.  The only problem is - they forget about gameplay.  You want to marry the gameplay of the old good games with the "graphics" of today.  There is ZERO reason why the new sports games can't be just as fun.  They just aren't.

7.  Matt's excursions have become yet another great staple to the show.

Now, where's the next show?
Black Flag NC

Thanks guys! We are very proud to be part of VMTV. Thank you to John for helping us get everything right!

Was wondering when someone would notice. You gotta admit though, it was good. Didn't sound like a Godzilla dub. It was pretty dead on.

It was alot of fun! Thank you
John Gibson

No no, thank you. Just wait until February. Man, I can't believe I've been doing this for 13 years.
John Gibson

Sooo.....no questions at all regarding the episode?

I like replaying the Mr. T Warcraft commercial, and the ending credits.

MAYBE MR.T IS HANDY WITH COMPUTERS!!
jakdin

Hey, I just noticed that I said the game was "HALO 2" but it was actually Halo 3!! LOL. Sorry folks. Nothing to see here.... move along... move along. Walk Now. Walk Now.
jakdin

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the show!!! Matthew & Bree, your spot rocks!! I love the way you went as far as makeup!!! DAM, that's nice.

Jason, it's cool that you, one of the ORIGINAL VMTVers is back! Thanks for the review!

Great opening skit, John. I love how you shrink yourself...all of you! I almost spit chili all over the PC.... and the new format for the Trivia is kickaxe.

Great show folks! I hope you all contribute again soon!

Yeah, I didn't intend to sound harsh at all - I just noticed it.  And yeah -  it was an excellent job.  I almost didn't notice it at all.  Besides, you gotta do what ya gotta do!  It would have taken me HOURS to get anything close to that.

I went over to my brother's house over the weekend and he showed me his Wii.  He also showed me the games he bought for the Turbografx which we got when we were kids, (and still have).  It made me think of a few things.

First, I noticed that the "Sin and Punishment" N64 import that Matt reviewed is up there for sale for the Wii.  I'd like to see more reviews on cool imported stuff and games in the orient that never made it to the U.S.  The missing original Final Fantasy lineup comes to mind as well.

Second, it made me think of some of the really innovative titles that were on the Turbografx.  Some more reviews of those games would be cool, too.  Hell, some of the hardware aspects of the Turbografx most people haven't heard about, (it WASN'T the first 16 bit console!).  You could also review the Turbografx emulator which allows you to play Turbografx cd games on your PC.

Lastly, it made me think again.  Not many things make me do that.  It made me think of all the cool PC titles we played 15 and 20 years ago.  Not many of those make it to the show, either.
John Gibson

Oh, between Jason and myself, we got plenty of PC titles. He has more, for certain.

I'd like to look at Sam and Max sometime for the PC. We'll look at more TG-16 titles. I would like to do a better review of Bonk's Adventure (you can see the review on Youtube). Definitely more arcade games are in the works, I want to look at some Commodore 64 games, and now that I know the Amiga emulator works, I want to grab some more titles.

More stuff in the pipeline. Definitely want to get out of the house now and then and do some outdoors shots (so no one complains about the wood paneling, they can complain about the neighborhood)

"Hey, I'm John, today we're going to review *BANG BANG *SCREAM* *HEY MUTHA* Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo *SCREEEEECH* Wii"

Maybe I'll film in a quiet neighborhood, like Amish country.
mjj58

Great show.I enjoyed every second of it.The guest reviewers did a great job as well.
I always look forward to a new episode. And John ...you haven't disappointed me yet.
KITTIE hXc

The makeup was alot of fun. You should see all our out takes. We do need to work on opening up infront of the camera though. We looked like wood. John, Matt and jason looked like pros.
John Gibson

Like I said, no one gets it dead on the first time. I need to show you the first show Jason and I did. And it wasn't Video Masters. I'll save that for February, though. Smile

Just relax, and be yourselves. Don't think you're reviewing something for an audience. Think, would you describe it the same way to a friend? or each other?

I'll cite more examples to you as we film next months show.
Galaxy_Stranger

asdfadsf

Oh yeah, that reminds me.

John, you need to release your Star Wars fan film to the public...

Reminds me when I did a stop motion test with a G.I.Joe 25 years ago with a Super8 video camera.

It would be neat if you did a breakdown on the forums of what apps you use to do what for the show and how you use them.  Especially the Blue-Screening.
John Gibson

Oh, you mean the Koopa Wars films? Pretty much all those videos were, they were demo tests with stop motion to see if we can do a movie length stop motion film. Of course, we couldn't!! I'll see what I can do there.
mjj58

Matt cracks me up.I find it amusing that he traded in his WII for an Xbox 360.
Time to play games with the big boys lol.You guys shoud do more segments on opening consoles etc.I find that sort of thing interesting.
I'm selling my 360 and getting a newer model. One with a different motherboard and gpu that is heat resistant. As well as having extra heatsinks in it.
I already got the red rings of death once and got a new console.
I'm sure you will get alot of enjoyment out of your 360 Matt.Have fun.
John Gibson

Well, once we got the Wii and 360, there's nothing left to open. I don't plan on getting a PS3 anytime soon. That'll really break the bank. I could be spending it on getting a new camera. Sheesh
Erikjust

I find my self disagreeing whit your first point what you want shows that are in the 80s should stay in the 80s.
I would rather put it like this if you arenīt prepared to do a decent job in rebooting a show DON`T do it.

We got a decent eksample whit Robotech the shadow chronicles that takes up from where the thired season more or less left of.

And it did a pretty good job at it actually, so thatīs one of the few time i would say where even though a show is from the 80s you can remake it, just be prepared to do a lot of work.

Yeah, now we're playing with power.... er, that's not M$ catch phrase. The Big Boys are back in town, in my living room!! [talkin'bout the 360 here folks]

Anyway. Glad that segment appeals to some folks, unfortunately I have nothing else to open, nor am I planning on purchasing/trading anything in the near future; sorry!

This 360 you all saw was the 2nd XBOX... now I have a 3rd one!!!! A few weeks after getting this 2nd machine the graphics card went wonky on me and started showing tons of noise and lines on the screen. I sent it in of course.

Now this 3rd Machine (360) has been running fine for about 2 months! W00T!

Wish me luck folks.  Twisted Evil

I'm on my 3rd Xbox as well Matt. Not happy but I can at least say MS's customer service has been loads better than Sony's.

Add me to your friends list. My Gamertag is Talonluck.

There've been about four or five great 360 games released this year, that I've wanted to play, but I'm not sure about buying an Xbox 360. When I buy a console, I want it to last. I still have every console I've ever owned and they all still work.
If I bought an Xbox 360 now, I'd really like to still be able to play it 10 years from now, but right now I don't trust the hardware enough to invest in one.

I agree to some extent. Some things from the past can be brought back. You just have to know how to do it right, and it also depends on what you decide to bring back.
Galaxy_Stranger

asdf

ANY franchise could be brought back.  The question is whether or not they want to do a good job on it - or simply make money.  Case in point:  Galactica.

The new Galactica series is a drama set in space with the Battlestar Galactica name slapped on it.  Nothing more.  That's Pandering and it pisses me off.  Don't tell me it's the original when it's not.  Transformers was the same way.  And Knight Rider...puke blood...

And I don't care how much Nimoy endorses the new Trek movie - that thing is just Muppet Babies with a Trek background.  Not to mention it finishes the job of killing off the mysique of the franchise which was started with DS9.  It also happens to destroy canon.

Why do people think that a franchise can only appeal to either OLD or NEW fans?  Why can't they understand that the new fans don't GIVE a shit about the old stuff and don't know the difference!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO LOSE THE OLD AUDIENCE TO GET THE NEW AUDIENCE!!!!!!!!
Splodge

I'm very skeptical of the new Trek movie. I'm going to see it but I'll probably be dissappointed.
Then again, The Next Generation was pretty much a reboot (a sequel series but still a riff on the same idea) and that was great. There's was alot of backlash against that show from old-Trek fans when it first came out. Now, I think everyone's pretty much accepted it.

Still I'm not against bringing things back. There's a new X-Files movie coming soon. It could go either way but I'm going to be optimistic. Also the new Futurama movie was very good. But those shows were only a few years off the air. It's harder to ressurect a show that's been gone for twenty-plus years.
Galaxy_Stranger

Well, X-files is different.  They have all the original people working on it that made the show and the first movie.  I EXPECT that one to be good.  And I don't see any way for them to sell out.

What pisses me off about Trek is that they've completely shunned DC Fontana and treat it as a completely new franchise.  They recycled TOS scripts for Next Gen episodes to get the classic fans to like it.  That's pandering.  And the Enterprise D was butt-ugly.
Erikjust

Indeed I also think it has lot to do whit the essence of the show.

Yes you can make a new knight rider series whit complete new cast that rocks, but only and I repeat only if you take the essence from the old show the thing that made it good, and duplicate it in the new show.

The best example of this could be Star trek the original series and Next generation. New cast new story and yet they manage to bring along the essence of the old show, preserve what was good about it and transfer it to the new show.

You might say ohh but that was years ago, have they done it in modern day time hmmm?? Yes they have Doctor Who the show had a LOOONNNG break from the last thing we heard from him which was a movie till we got the good doctor back on tv.

And what happened we got a whole new show which where everybit as good as the old one.
So all in all it can be done whit an entirely new cast if you remember to bring whit you the essence the spirit of the old show what made it special what made it good and transfer it to the new show.

Never did see Robotech. I don't mind if a series picks up where another leaves off. What I don't like is when they completely revamp it for a modern audience, so much that it's unrecognizable.

Let me ask you, Erik. Is there much of a drastic change from the original Robotech and the "Shadow Chronicles". Animation? Voices? Are they recycling plots from the original series?

Now I wouldn't attack a show that kept the familiarity, and all aspects that made the original great. Show me some examples, if you could, of the original Robotech, and the one you mentioned, and I'll have a look.
Galaxy_Stranger

asdf

Here's a pretty good AMV some fan put together to show you the animation of the original show:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaccmzGMhzU&feature=related

Shadow Chronicles trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wYnlKlL7kE

Robotech was 3 different anime shows glued together to make "Robotech" in the U.S. in the early 80's.  Robotech consisted of Macross, Super Dimension Southern Cross and Mospeda.  The show itself is rife with weird voice acting and questionable scripts and dialog.  (they were only given around 4 months to write the whole thing into a single show - which shows you how much faith Harmony Gold had/has in its properties)

Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles was just produced a year or so ago.  It picks up at the end of the original Robotech show.  Shadow Chronicles is a mix of traditional anime animation and CGI models - kinda like Transformers is now on Cartoon Network.  (The CGI animation of the mecha was TERRIBLE...)

Shadow Chronicles seems to break a few details, but as I mentioned, the original show contradicted itself at times.  For some reason, they neglected to hire a voice actress to perform the major role she played 20 years ago in the show.  This woman still has no idea why she was left out yet still attends cons and keeps relatively visible in the Robotech community.

The most glaring flaw I find in Shadow Chronicles is the script writing.  This clown has absolutely no idea what a story is.  It's a bit hard to follow the plot and there is no clear ending.  It is meant to be the pilot of a tv series, but there has to be some sort of closure - you can't just leave it open-ended.  It has to stand on its own.  But it's ok - I'm getting used to walking out of the theater with blood on my ass.

With all its flaws, Robotech had the same potential as Star Wars and Star Trek.  I enjoyed it knowing that it could become something better.  For me, Shadow Chronicles kept the Robotech legacy alive completely - it looked rushed and neglected.

One show you should *REALLY* check out is Galaxy Rangers.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMpsAmWbSJg  I'm still waiting for this one to be fully released on DVD...
Erikjust

As you wish i hope you like anime:
http://www.veoh.com/videos/v14652...Id=1279210592687282434&rank=6

This is essentially the series Shadow chronicles picked up upon, its the third series in the robotech saga where the first one is called macross and the next one is called the masters.

And here is Robotech shadow chronicals (i was only able to locate the trailer sorry).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wYnlKlL7kE

if you like the old series do your self a favour and get a hold of shadow chronicles it rocks.

Plus they got a few of the old guys back.
Galaxy_Stranger

No, that's exactly what John is talking about - that's the hacked "remastered" version of Robotech.
Erikjust

What woman? As far as i can see they got all the old voice actors to those charecters that appered back.

Perhaps is it the one who played Ariel?

From what i can see all the charecters who where there in the movie was voiced by the same voice actor as before.

The movie didnīt seem rushed or anything to me, and the mecha looked great in the movie.

And i didnīt find the script half bad either pleanty of story there.

The only compalin i got about the movie is the open ending, but since we are getting a new movie in 2009 so i guess that is okay.

So far my only real concern is the fact the Toby the man who played Spider-man has plans to transfere Robotech to the big screen.

Somehow i fear another Bayformers look alike, and honestly i would say Robotech deservs better then that MUCH better.

Great Episode

John, Great episode! It's really weird seeing Matt go on his excursions because I think I know where he was! I love that you are trying new things. Guest Reviewers are always fun. I'm debating about getting an X Box 360 (I own a PS3) because of some killer RPGs are appearing on that console. I saw that commercial and the one with William Shatner (That was funny!) I loved Evil Dead (Especially the Possessed Tree scene).

Speaking of Bruce Campbell, have you seen two shows produced by Sam Raimi? The First was Jack of All trades (Starring Campbell) and Cleopatra 2525. I think they should be on a Grumble and Glorify segment.

As always, Keep up the good work!
John Gibson

I've heard of Jack of All Trades, never watched it, though. Well, now that we got a full house of hosts, anyone who joins now may be a guest reviewer. It'll get weird if we have like 12 regular hosts, although, that means I can play lazy one month.
