The CW Developing A 'Dick Grayson' Series?Holy Series Spinoff, Batman!!
http://www.newsarama.com/tv/100801-GraysonsonCW.html
| Quote: | According to Variety, the CW is preparing a new series based on Dick Grayson – before he was Robin, the sidekick of Batman. Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson – executive producers of Smallville, and Supernatual executive producer McG are behind the project, which has received a put pilot commitment from CW.
As the trade reports, the series will take a Smallville tone in that it will focus on the young man (Dick “DJ” Grayson - his full name is Richard John Grayson) before his hero days. The series will either replace Smallville, if this turns out to be the series final season, as many are speculating, or be a companion piece to the series starring a young Clark Kent, if this season’s ratings justify a ninth season.
Like Smallville, The Graysons will take elements of the character from DC Comics continuity, and put its own spin on it. In the original origin of Robin, there was virtually no backstory given, save that his parents died as a result of a gangster’s extortion scheme at the Haly Circus, where the Flying Graysons were performing. Some backstory has been added in since that story in 1940’s Detective Comics #38, but never with the scope that The Graysons is aiming at. |
If this the CW's way of wooing us comic geeks back, they should try harder. I just don't see how a show revolving around Dick Grayson's pre 'Boy Wonder' days could work. He only becomes great after Bruce takes him in. While i'm no fan of 'Smallville', at least that worked because you had Clark discovering his powers. What they should've done was make a 'Nightwing' series. Besides, non comic readers don't know about Dick's post 'Boy Wonder' life as Nightwing, and this would be a much better idea for a series than 'The Flying Graysons'.

Couldn´t agree more i heard they want to introduce Doomsday in the Smallville series.
As if they didn´t fuck up the show enough already by introducing Braniac, Supergirl and other iconic villains, that we all know Superman won´t be facing before he´s quite a bit older.
As for this show i can only dread from what they will do to the mythos, it wouldn´t surprise me ONE BIT if they introduced Starfire in the middle of it all.
Even though we know that Robin never meet her before AFTER he and Bruce had departed ways.
So far all i see is Another show that will botch up the Mythos completely.
But i agree they should do a Nightwing show instead suddenly they would have a lot more Freedom to make a show that was whitin the Mythos.
Plus (although it would be a cheap trick) they could introduce Jason Todd in the show and maybe show his death toward the end of the show.
Now that would be nice.

I get that they want something Batman related on TV, seeing as the movies are doing well, but this sounds like a terrible idea.
Not only is there no real Dick Grayson story to tell pre-Robin, but they're clearly going for a carbon-copy of what they have with Smallville (which I never liked).
If they want a Batman TV show without Batman, there's much better material to use - like the 'Gotham Central' comics or some of the other spinoffs.
I can see why they didn't go for a 'Nightwing' show though. Not many people know the character. I read a lot of comics but have only personally read one Nightwing story. Someone who doesn't read comics at all mightn't get it.
Also they're probably trying to avoid another 'Birds of Prey'. I never saw that show but I've heard bad things (I'm still curious to check it out, though).
