Star Trek

New Trailer Up:

http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2008/11/someone_who_pays_to_see_movies.php

I honestly don't know what to think about this movie.

I'm a big Star Trek fan but I'm open to change (I'm not going to be too much of a purist) so I want to like this movie. And so far there are lots of things to like, there's definitely alot of fanservice there. There are some good casting choices and they've incorporated a lot of the original imagery (uniforms, style of ships etc.) without too much 'modernisation'. There's alot of things to like but this trailer gives me a bad feeling.

Some of it looks really good and some of it looks really bad. That whole opening sequence with young Kirk is really annoying. Actually, I'm not sure about their whole approach to Kirk yet.
Chris Pine as Kirk is probably the only really bad casting choice they've made (yes, including Sulu).

I'll reserve judgement until I see the actual movie.
John Gibson

I didn't even need the sound turned on to know this sucks.

Come on, you got friggin Sylar playing Spock. Folks, I think Zachary Quinto rocks, and all, but NO ONE can ever play Spock like Leonard Nimoy.

And of course, the obvious, NO ONE can ever play Kirk like William Shatner.
Splodge

I agree that nobody other than Nimoy will ever truly be Spock.
However, you have to admit, that Quinto is a good choice. The visual resemblance is close enough and he definitely has the acting ability to pull off the role.

I have almost no confidence in the new Kirk though.

I don't think this is going to suck. JJ Abrams has talent. It's definitely not going to follow the philosophy of the original show. It's going to be too epic and too much of an action movie. But I believe it's going to be good simply because Abrams will make it good (whether it deserves to be or not).

There seems to be a lot bad jokes in it that really doesnīt belong.

Kirk spying on Uhura as she changes? I havenīt seen all of the original Star Trek series, but i am pretty sure Krik never did any of that.

Sure he liked to hit on some of the females they meet, but of the core crew nope never.

This new Spock i am not quite sure about.

In those clips he sounds a little TOO emotional and thats just not consistent whit any of the Star trek mythos i know about Spock.

Yes he had his moments of emotions but those where actually quite rare and most of the time he acted like a true Vulcan even though he was only half a Vulcan.

You can tell that this is essentially an attempt to revamp 'Star Trek' for a new generation of fans. Weather it works, or not remains to be seen.

Spock was always very emotional in the show. It was almost a running joke that he had emotions but was trying to hide it.
He'd make an emotional decision somewhere in the episode and later Kirk would confront him with it, trying to get him to admit it. Then Spock would usually have some flimsy excuse as to why he was acting on Logic and not emotion.

In the trailer it looks like something else, though. The aggression he shows looks more like Vulcan emotion than Human emotion. Without meditation and a commitment to Logic, Vulcans are violent and aggressive. That's what it looks like here. Spock's violent side was shown in a few episodes and the movies but not too much.
I'm hoping it has something to do with the introduction of Romulans that Spock acts this way. Romulans are Vulcans who embraced their emotions, embraced their violent nature. Perhaps, Spock who was always trapped between being Human and Vulcan now sees a third option. This would be a dramatically interesting angle, that hasn't ever really been explored before.

As for the bad jokes. I too am concerned about this. Then again the original show had its fair share of bad jokes. After each mission, Kirk, Spock and Bones, would have a little comical moment on the bridge at the end of each episode.

I'm not trying to defend this film. I just think this is a case where it's important to keep an open mind. Forget about the history of Trek and treat it as its own entity.

I was skeptical when I first heard the idea. But they seem to be treating the material right. They seem to understand the duality of Spock's character and the importance of the original show's look.
Also, the script had to be approved by Nimoy before production could begin. If Nimoy thinks it's a good story, I'll give it a chance.

The only thing I'm worried about is the writer's working on it. This is being written by the writer's of Transformers. That film was terrible. But hopefully they're working closely with Abrams and the producers to turn out something good this time. (Transformers was a Michael Bay film after all, so it's probably not entirely the writer's fault).

Nimoy looks really old.
I'm hoping that they've deliberately made him look older than he actually is (I have a feeling they did). He's almost unrecognisable.
Erikjust

No they didnīt take a look at this picture here

Nemoy is 77 years old, so he is and old man.

Even still, he looks somehow fragile in the new trailer. It could be something in the eyes or even the hair that's giving me that impression.
I guess you're right though. He looks good for 77.
