This series made the Dreamcast one of my favourite platforms ever.
The Shenmue series is unique in all senses they have all kind of gameplay (including the VF combat system), characters, the music is so damn sublime. The story is simple but the way is narrated beautiful, unique i must say. Visually it's beautiful it's look fresh for being a game from 1999/2000 Today still looks jaw dropping. When the DC was diying i got an european pirate version of Shenmue 2 cause the US version was never released then i got it for Xbox (I bought an Xbox just to play Shenmue 2).
Because of the lack of commercial succes of the series (it costed 70 million dollars to develop) we haven't seen yet the 3rd part and we, the fans of this cult game still waiting. There was a BBC UK Videogaiden fan campaing to bring the series back to life i don't know if you ever heard of that. Here is a link to a video and the official website of the Shenmue III campaign
In my opinion is one of the few video games to be considered a true piece of art it's also poetic the beauty of that game will stay forever inside me i think it was the best gamer experienced i ever had in my life.
Warning if you ever play Shenmue 1 and 2 you'll suffer the waiting for the 3rd part

I've seen Shenmue in action years ago. Looked interesting, but I never picked up the controller to play. I watched someone else play, think it was one of my cousins college roommates. We also had DOA 2 Hardcore. Played that. It looked to me that whenever you had to do an action. Jump over a gap, fight an enemy, you'd have to press a button as it flashed on the screen. Is this right? It didn't just let you control the character as you chose? Like if you wanted to run away from a bar fight, rather than kick everyone's ass in the room, it wouldn't let you do that?

I've got the first one for Dreamcast. I liked driving the forklift.

If I can secure a Dreamcast, and Shenmue, I'd like to review it, and see what happens. I might like it, or hate it.
How different is the sequel?

I actually own the game and have owned it since it came out and I haven't played it yet! How crazy is that?

I just bid on a Dreamcast on Ebay today. The auction ends in 4 days, and Shenmue comes with it. Looks like the total price (assuming no one else outbids me) is $12 or so total. If all goes well, expect a full review to Shenmue sometime at the beginning of Season 2.

Good stuff. Hope you win it. I like my dreamcast alot as it had a large selection of games that were unique to the console.

Success!!! I just paid for the Dreamcast and Shenmue package. The bidding did go up a bit, so I paid about $32 for it, which is pretty good, considering I'm getting the game with it. Hopefully, this won't be a rip-off and I get only 1 out of 2, and I just either just the system, or just the game.
The auction looks legit. And for $12 shipping, I hope I get it quick, and in good condition.
