A few weeks ago, I finally caved in and got an Xbox 360. A friend of mine was selling it second hand and offered me a good deal.
For a long while I'd been wanting to play "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" and I had neither a Playstation nor the 100euro for the game (that's how much the PAL version goes for these days), so the Xbox seemed like a good alternative. It was a bit more expensive but it meant I could also play some of the new games I wanted to try (Bioshock, GTA IV etc.).
Well it finally cr*pped out on me today. My friend works in Gamestop and he thinks he'll probably be able to swap it over for me without having to send it away, so it's not such a big deal.
It's still fairly annoying. Microsoft have admitted the problem and are giving good customer service but it's still fairly lame of them to release shoddy hardware.
Imagine, if twenty years ago, the NES had had the same problem; if ROB's eyes flashed red and the system refused to play games. I don't think people would have stood for it then. Nintendo probably would have gone bankrupt.
These days we're just expected to accept this kind of thing.

I hear the mortality rate for the 360 is is 3 out 0f 5. Umm.. remind me why next gen is so awesome? Why am I supposed to part with 400-500 bucks for an unreliable system and a few $65 games? Probably even more where you live, Splodge.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, worst console generation in video game history.

But .... but ... Castlevania.
Actually seriously, I do agree with you. But like I say, I got a good deal on it and there are enough games I'm curious about for it to be worthwhile. Still, there are no excuses for it.
Probably should have gone for the Playstation (1) but there are almost no Playstation games that interest me.

LOL! That pic's awesome, man!

Weird. I left it off overnight and tried it again this morning. It's working again ... but for how long.

Maybe its over-heating. My friends over-heated and ended up sending it in. Took forever to get back, but it was when it was first released. He has not had a problem since. I have not played the playstation (1) for a long time. I think the only games I ever played on it was Frogger, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Doom.

Dead again.
I don't think it's overheating. I tried it today after work and it had the red ring. It must have been off for over a whole day, so I don't think it could have gotten too hot.
I'm going to Gamestop tommorrow to swap it. Hopefully I'll get a better unit.
Over the past 10-15 years I've collected a fair few consoles; SNES, Dreamcast, PC Engine, Mega Drive, Wii and now Xbox 360 (We had a Commodore 64 but I don't know where that is now).
Out of all of them, the 360 is the only one that I don't think will last forever, the only one that I would consider a temporary purchase (Okay sometimes the Dreamcast's disc-drive sounds like it's going to kill me and my entire family but that doesn't count).

I got it again.
Red Ring of Death on my second 360 today. I only used it casually not nearly as heavily as my other consoles (like my 2006 Wii and my 199X SNES) and I got 10 months out of it.
This displeases me. Especially because I have a preorder on Street Fighter IV, that I'm supposed to collect tomorrow.
Honestly I can't afford to replace it right now, so if I'm not entitled to a replacement (probably not), I'll probably just wait until 2011/12 and get a reliable later model then. Also, at this point in my life, I don't have the time to dedicate to gaming that I used to so it's not even worth it. Still sucks though.
I'll leave it overnight. Chances are I'll get another couple of hours here and there before it dies completely (it did almost turn on once).
The good news is that I now have space on my shelf to setup my PC-Engine again. Now I can play some of the original Street Fighter (released as Fighting Street for some reason). Eugh.

Damn that sucks. I didn't buy my 360 from a store, i traded my ps3 for it. I fear the RROD like crazy, especially since even if I paid I can't send mine back lol.
