Possible Review?

First, take a peek at this:
http://skulltag.com/news/

That is one of the ports of DooM2 called Skulltag.  I thought a review of the current state of DooM would be fun and kinda spread the word that people never stopped playing DooM.  Because of ports like Skulltag, DooM is about as customizable - or MORE customizable than most modern 3D games.

If you need any info, I can supply it.  Anyway, just an idea for a review.

Dude, I love Doom. I got it for the PSX off of ebay a couple weeks back and I've been playing the hell out of it. It's a combination of Doom 1 and 2 plus some really creative extra levels thrown in. Long live DOOM!!

Yeah, DooM is spiffy!

This mod shows off some of the new features of ZDoom in a retelling of the first episode of DooM1.  http://kdizd.drdteam.org/

All you need is a ZDoom-based port and the "doom.wad" file from your installation of DooM.  ZDoom based ports include ZDoom, GZDoom and SKulltag.  ZDoomGL isn't as closely related and may not support many of the features implemented in Knee Deep in ZDoom.  ZDaemon is also based on ZDoom, but is more focussed on recreating the original DooM environment without new features, so again, it may not support the mod.

I could take a look at this for a Video Vision segment. We did talk about a Doom 2 conversion once.

Yeah, that was like Ghost Busters Doom.  That mod is quite antiquated and was put together before many of the new features had been implemented.

Doesn't quite give system requirements. The only computer of mine that does TV out is my P3 with Windows ME. You think it could handle this game?

Got a chance to see the trailer, and in fact downloading it. So if it turns out that I can't run this on my antique PC with the TV output, I can at least show the trailer in the Spew, I guess. We'll see what happens.

That's why God made FRAPS ;-p

It's more dependent on your video card than anything else.  All my machines are AMD's with a gig and a half processors.  It's certainly worth a try.

Why do you need TV outs?  You're editing all this digitally anyway, right?
John Gibson

Fraps doesn't seem to work on this PC, that's why I have to do TV out to my DVD recorder, then transfer what I want to my PC, due to my limited space in GB.

If you can find me a FRAPS that won't shut down on me, let me know.

What version did you have last?
John Gibson

LOL forgot, maybe the second to last latest version.

I'll see what I can dig up.  If all else fails, I can always make the movies for you and put them on my server.

If you like, I can even write up some descriptions for you.  Many of the features aren't readily apparent unless you're a modder.

Downloaded Skulltag, but it says I'm missing the wad file. So does this mean I need the original Doom to play?

EDIT: Yep, guess so. I got it. Looks cool. I'll play more later today.

Yes, these ports only replace the original game executable.  The resources in the .wad file are considered proprietary and are not openly distributed.

The port checks the current directory for any IWAD files.  If it finds one, it uses it and starts that game.  If you want to play DooM2, you use the Doom2 IWAD.  If you want to play Heretic - use whatever IWAD Heretic uses.  If the port finds multiple game IWADs, it then generates a list of what it finds and allows you to choose which one you want to play.

One neat feature of the ZDoom ports is that you can create Hexen formatted maps and then use them in DooM2.  Hexen and DooM2 are very similar, but Hexen maps support scripting and some other fun toys.
