Need some suggestions for my retro gaming collectionsHey guys, I just realized that I've been neglecting my retro systems lately.In fact, I've mainly been focusing on those evil modern gaming systems, but unfortunately, I don't have any cool retro game shops around me. It's Gamestop, or Game Crazy who have both, like the A-holes they are, dropped their entire retro catalog of games. Pretty much every game I've bought this year comes from the 32-bit era and on. I'm not purposely trying to ignore the retro consoles, but unfortunately, I seem to mainly be focused on them lately. After looking at a rather large stack of PS2,PS3,360, GC, and Xbox games I just bought the other day (a Game Crazy store was going out of business and every game and item in the store was marked down 50%), I realized that all the games were a little too involved for me to start on. I wanted something simple, so I've been on a Snes binge all night. My retro collections are lacking, because I grew up poor, and only really got old enough to start buying my own games around the time of the PS1. Also, I've never been a huge fan of hand held systems, but I've had a Game Boy Player for my GC for years now, and it's time I finally learn the ins and outs of the GB, GBC, and GBA (I'm extremely late to that party). Awesome, a fellow Sega guy! Yeah my friends and I had the Master System in the mid-80's and took turns playing it at each others homes. Astro Warrior was epic for us, it came packed in with the system and every fiber of that game awakens memories in me, especially of the first time we beat the Zanoni. I definitely have some more Master System stuff lined up for future episodes. |

I think the SMS is an underappreciated system. I had one long before I had an NES. I had Great Baseball, Pro Wrestling, Astro Warrior, Zillion, Gangster Town, Hang-On/Safari Hunt, Great Football, Shinobi, Transbot, Rambo, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and more. I loved the idea of the games on the credit cards. Dude, I can't wait to see you tackle a few more SMS games. |

Cool thanks for the suggestions. I have Decap Attack on both of the compilations on the PS2 and PS3, and I've seen the ouch price for Thunder Force 3, but I still want it. As for the Master System, I bought it recently, because it was a curiosity to me, but seeing some of the killer games it had released on it, made me want to play it. I've heard Great things about Zillion on the Master System, and will probably make that my next pick up for the system. I do have Phantasy Star on a GBA compilation (one of the few GBA games I have), and I have the PS1 port of R-Types, but may still look into the MS port just to do it. One great thing about Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is that it has Golden Axe Warrior hidden on it, and I was really interested in trying that for the Master System, but it's kinda pricey for a MS game, but thankfully, now I have it. Zelda clone for sure, but it's not always a bad thing to be a clone. This week I got two new games in the mail. Neither was spectacular, but I got Rival Turf on the Snes (a generic beat 'em up that I played many years ago, and even thought it to be generic then) which was an early beat 'em up for the Snes, and even one-uped Final Fight with the ability to play with two players, and Zero Tolerance on the Genesis which has always been a curiosity to me. It's interesting to see a FPS on the Genesis. It hasn't aged well, and is largely just wolfenstein, but is rather difficult. It's an interesting game for the Genesis, but not spectacular when compared to more modern FPS games. Today I also put in an order for Bad Dudes and Kabuki on the NES. I paid less than $9 for both including shipping. |

Yeah, I'd imagine that Zero Tolerance has aged poorly. It was cool to have a FPS on the Genesis back in the day, though. I managed to find a copy of Thunder Force 3 (Lightning Force) for 5 bucks at a flea market type place last year. Otherwise that one is a pricy game. Prices are always high on shooters that have a rep.

Hmm...Well I'll suggest a few SNES games. You definitely need to get Breath of Fire II. Much better than the first.
Second, Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars. Great game. |

Ah yes, Breath of Fire II. I loved that game. I loved it so much that I picked up the GBA port, and it didn't hold a save. By the time I realized that it didn't hold a save it was too late to take it back, so I've got a BoF II GBA kart that's essentially a paperweight. I can't see why some 20 year old NES games I have can still hold a save, but a game released in 2002 cannot. The frustration I tell you. |

I also enjoy Breath of Fire 3 and 4 for the PS. 5 was a complete travesty. I agree. I think it depends on the size of battery being used for the backups. Back in the day they were larger batteries and when the GBA came out, they probably used smaller ones. I've got to figure out how to get my save system to work on my Saturn since it appears that the battery save system in it is dead. |

The best way to get your Saturn save system to work is to get a memory card. I haven't had a battery in mine for years. The memory cards can be pricey though, so if they're asking too much, look into an action Replay Plus 4mb. The only thing with the action Reply plus is that you've gotta reset your system before you can transfer the save data to the AR Plus. Apparently, the Saturn would read it as just a regular memory card if you could save directly to the AR. So I play the game, and get the data saved on the internal Saturn memory, and then, when you're done playing, be careful to hit reset to take you into the AR's menu. Then transfer the saved data to the AR. It's a pain in the posterior, but it's better than starting over every time. I have both and AR Plus, and the official Memory card, but lately, I've just had the AR plugged into my system, so I've been saving that way. |
