For the last 2 years a bunch of Mother fans have been translating Mother 3 for the gba. It's finally finished. They just released a translation patch.
I've played about 4 hours of the game and so far everything is really professional and bug-free. The writing is pretty good too, considering these aren't professional translators.
As for the game itself, it's really good. I'm a big Earthbound (Mother 2) fan, so I was definitely looking forward to this.
I don't play alot of RPGs - I'll only really have the time if it's a game worth playing - and right now it's definitely worth my time.
So far though, it doesn't quite measure up to Earthbound (that's not a bad thing, Earthbound is in my top 10 games, so it's still a good game in any case).
The introduction of adults as main characters was both a good thing and a bad thing. It was good for the story because it made the whole situation more serious (it's no longer just a couple of kids saving the world, everybody is affected) but it also took away some of the innocence and wonder that the other game had.
Also, the Mother series always had an odd sense of humour (in the good way) but in this game it's sometimes out of place.
"Do you want the good news or the bad news, first? The Good news is that I found a Drago Fang, that you can use as a weapon. The Bad news is that I found it stabbed through your wife's heart".
That's not the exact line but that's how it went. If this was a joke, that would be okay but the rest of the scene is shown as deeply tragic and the parts afterwards involve the woman's two kids mourning her death, one crying at her grave and the other seeking revenge. The joke is way out of place and kind of unsettling.
Maybe it was the translator's fault.
Anyway, check it out. Alot of people put alot of work into it - into localising a game Nintendo didn't want to.
