Do we hate Sonic or is it just Sega?

As you may know, Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't been doing well lately, especially when it comes to Sonic the Hedgehog for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, while on the other hand there are good games like the recent Sonic Rush games and the unforgetable classics on the Sega Genesis.
While on the Internet every day we see reviewers butcher Sonic the Hedgehog and gamesites give Sonic a bad reputation because of his recent games and many people leave messages saying that "Sonic the Hedgehog sucks!" (Which is like a dagger through my heart, because I am a major Sonic fan) While others try to defend Sonic saying "Leave Sonic alone"
The point is for those who know what I'm talking about, in your opinion is it that you fellow gamers hate the Sonic the Hedgehog frachise or is it that you blame Sega? Please give your opinion and a possible valid reason

I don't think we can really blame Sega. They're still putting out good games, not as many as alot of other publishers but still enough for the size of company.
The Monkey Ball series is great and I like Jet Set Radio. And that new Iron Man game looks stellar.

I am an oldschool Sonic fan so I do try to like the new Sonic games, or at least give them a chance. But they usually dissappoint. I think the blame rests with Sonic Team. Weren't they behind the new NiGHTs game (correct me if I'm wrong), which I've heard is a big dissappointment.
Actually I can't think of any recent Sonic Team game that was good, except possibly the handheld titles, which still don't match the quality of Sonic 1-3&Knuckles.

I think the other problem is that there is a big division between Sega of America and Sega of Japan. I don't know much about it but I know it was the main reason behind the failure of the planned "Sonic Xtreme" for the Sega Saturn.

I too am down with the Hedgehog. I'm like you guys, I try to like newer Sonic games. I don't have any of the next gen consoles but I've heard that the Sonic games are garbage.

Breaks my heart, cause I love the blue blur.

I think that both Sega, and Sonic Team just haven't figured out how to successfully bring Sonic into 3D gameplay the way that Nintendo has brought Mario into 3D. The sense of speed somehow gets lost in the transition from sprites to pixels, which is why the new game they're working on is going for the 2.5D approach.

speed has nothing to do with it, it was the solid gameplay that made the old sonic games (and the first sonic adventure) good.

I mean, bubsy was fast too, he sucked in 2-D and he sucked in 3-D

Oldschool Sonic was all about gameplay. The "sense of speed" (which for some reason everyone keeps talking about these days) had very little to do with it.

These days people think Sonic was all about running real fast from left to right but really it was all about intelligent level design.
If you look at levels like Lava Reef or Death Egg (Both Sonic & Knuckles), you'll see how well put together they are. If you play blindly and just focus on speed when playing those levels, you'll probably just end up going in circles.

Then again, it is possible to make a good Sonic game based on speed. They could make it where the focus was dodging obstacles and making jumps.
Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) was mostly about speed for me. When I play it, I run from left to right at top speed, jumping when I have to. The challenge comes in timing the jumps and avoiding the pitfalls.
They could make a decent Sonic game like that but it would be nowhere near as good as the Sonic games, of old.

quoted for truth.

Agreed. In this modern day of constant innovation, I feel that sometimes "fun" has been left by the wayside. Classic Sonic was pure fun. Developers may do well to learn something from the 16-bit era.

Now that is true...
