I have a similar story. I was going through my storage (maybe less than a year ago) and I came across this trash bag that had a Magnavox Odyssey 2 with a good chunk of games. Immediately, I plugged it in, and started playing, even though the reception was kinda bad.
Technically, the NES wasn't free. At some point, someone paid for it. You're just finding it years later after many electronic retail outlet stores went out of business.
