Posted: Dec 19 2008 9:20 pm Post subject: The Future of VMTV- Yet again!
I gave this some thought, and as things become more stressful for all of us VMTV hosts (our jobs, families, and other obligations), it's hard for the 5 of us to come together, and create content for the show every month. You've noticed that sometimes, it may just be Matt Rau, myself, and maybe the other Matt. Sometimes, it'll be Earl, myself, Matthew and Bree.
Before I go any further, let me say that the show isn't ending. We still love doing the show for you. It's just becoming difficult to churn out reviews, and all that each and every month.
In the old days of Video Masters, we used to do shows maybe 5 times a year for 3 years straight, from 1995 to 1997. We went on hiatus in 1998 cause Jason went off to college, and it was just me and a handful of others running the Video Masters website where we wrote reviews.
I'm also not suggesting we limit ourselves to 5 shows a year. I think between the 5 of us, we can do more, but I'm starting to think it won't be every month. Already, I'm starting to think a January show is out of the question. Speaking for myself, I need to find a better paying job. I have loans to pay off, and I would like to settle down with my GF someplace that we can afford.
As for everyone else, Matt Rau is a family man with a full time job. He's still with us, voicing DUKE, the computer. It's hard for him to devote enough time every month to the show.
Matthew and Bree, as everyone knows, recently got married. Both of them have full time jobs, and it gets very busy for both of them, and naturally, I understand how difficult it can be to sit down and film stuff.
Jason is in the stages of moving out. He should be back in 2009. He, too, has a full time job.
As for the Season 2 DVD, I was answering this question earlier today from a fan. I know I said this Christmas, but things are too crazy right now. Between that damn virus I had, messed up a lot of my files, I'm going to be backed up on the DVD for a while. It may be released in late 2009. I'll keep everyone up to speed.
To reiterate, VMTV is not ending. We're not taking an extended vacation or hiatus. We've gotten to a point where we need a bit more time to put the shows together, and I feel like a slavedriver asking everyone "are you going to be in the show? When are you sending me this video?"
This plan will make it easy on all of us. So now, we can submit stuff when we can, not by a certain deadline.
There will be a Christmas show. We'll skip January, we'll definitely have a show in February (hell, that's our 14 year anniversary, baby). As for the future months, it's undecided, and I hate to make a schedule like:
March, 2009
No April show
May, 2009
June, 2009
No July show
August, 2009
If you're anxious to see a new show, check the forums often. I'd also like to upload more classic VM episodes. I tried doing it tonight, but the VHS quality has gotten worse over the last 12 years, but I'll try again in January, 2009.
I also might do some experiments with Earl and DUKE, which will be VMTV related. I'm not sure what yet, so I won't make any promises.
I guess that's about it, for now. Sorry to have to do this, but I can assure you we haven't given up the show _________________ John R. Gibson

Whatever you think is best, dude. Like I've told you before, Bree and I are just happy to help out. _________________ "One of God's own prototypes. Too weird to live, too rare to die." --Hunter S Thompson Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Yeah, man. With the DVD, I need more time than I thought.
In the long run, I think not making a show every month will be less stressful on all of us. No more deadlines, the shows will be good quality, and not a rush job. _________________ John R. Gibson

I'm sorry to hear that the show is gonna be 'downsized', but given the fact that it's hard it is to get a new episode done on time, i can understand the cutback in production. Maybe this will work out for the better. _________________ If it's got wings, i can crash it!
Let's hope so. We'll see what happens next year. Like I said, there's no set schedule of shows yet, so we can have 3 straight months of shows, and then take 2 months off, or something to that effect.
In the old days (haha) we never knew when a show would come out. We could start filming in April, and a show wouldn't get completed until Mid-May. Back then, I was pulling hairs to get Jose or Winston, or whoever to come over and film their stuff, and record their voiceovers.
At least it's not like that today. _________________ John R. Gibson

Hey, pacing yourself is important. To pull off a MONTHLY show that featured complete VIDEO reviews and production is nearly impossible - at least to the level of quality you'd want.
It sucks for me because when I find a new show, I have a fuck-ton load of archived shows to listen to and then when I get current - one show a month is EXCRUTIATING to wait for!
It's really sad the Retrogaming Radio keeled-over, and I'm still hoping he'll wind up doing maybe annual updates from when he goes to classic gaming shows and maybe snagging an interview here and there. But RGR is gone for good. VMTV is about all there is. And it would really REALLY suck if you burned out and decided to hang it all up.
I agree. I enjoy listening to them, and it's a good fix until a new VMTV comes out. With audio, you can listen to it anywhere. _________________ John R. Gibson

You also should consider how many years you've been doing the show. That my friend in itself is a milestone. And only now your thinking about downsizing the show. But as you said that way it will be of good quality and not a rush job. Like everyone say you must do what you think is best for you and for the show. G
Still feel a bit guilty. I enjoyed a monthly deal, whether I was doing it myself, or if there was two of us, four of us, etc.
What I really want to focus on is my personal life. I'm 30 years old, I've been back home in NY for 4 years, trying to move out, and get a place with my GF.
Ya know, get out of the basement, hehe. If I had been living at home this whole time, it'd be embarrassing.
So right now, the plan is put aside some money, and when the time comes, move out. VMTV will still go on no matter where I live. They'll be a show even when I'm unpacking boxes of my shit. _________________ John R. Gibson

Hey, glad to see you've made it to the forums. Thanks for signing up.
This move we've done definitely isn't permanent. I miss doing monthly shows. If we get more people to do the show with us, we'll definitely go back to a monthly format. I do want to try to put out at least 3 or 4 shows before the end of July.
We'll see what happens. _________________ John R. Gibson

So far, everyone who has ever been on this show has submitted game or movie reviews first. Both Matt's have done stuff like go to outside locations, or review comics, other books, etc.
The video should answer any basic questions. If you're still not sure, I'll be happy to fill in the blanks.
