I love shooters or shoot-em-ups or shmups or whatever you call them. These games were everywhere back in the 16bit days. R-type, Gradius, Lifeforce, love it all. Anyone else? Got any recommendations? I have a PS2, Xbox, and SNES here in Utah. Back home in North Carolina, I have a Dreamcast, Genesis, Virtual Boy(ha!), and Game Boy Advance. In 6 months I'm moving back and will have all my video games in one place. Know of a forgotten gem for any of those systems? Let me know.  Very Happy

For Dreamcast, I'd recommend Ikaruga.
For SNES I'd say UN Squadron, Aero Fighters, Super R-Type, Strike Gunner STG.

If you like shmups I'd seriously recommend getting a Turbo Grafx 16 / PC Engine. It can be pricey but if you get one with the CD drive, it's fairly easy to burn discs for it (not that I condone that). That was pretty much the console for Shoot-em-ups.  On that I'd recommend Raiden, Tiger Shark, Avenger, Gate of Thunder, Rayxanber. It also had the best home version of R-Type.

I've been looking into getting U.N. Squadron off of ebay. Aero Fighters must super rare cause it's selling for $100 bucks or more! I have Super R-type (although I prefer R-type III) for my SNES and Tiger Shark for my Genesis.

Thanks guys! Very Happy

I forgot about R-Type III. You're right, it is a much better game. The level design is really amazing.

Aero Fighters is rare. Good luck with that one. Ikaruga as mentioned is great as well, also I believe it is available for the xbox.

Ikaruga looks awesome but it's only for the gamecube in the U.S. What were the odds of Nintendo landing a third party exclusive? Just my luck!

OK, after you guys help along with the folks at shmups.com I have the following shooters:

Castle Shikigami 2-PS2
Shooter: Space Shot-PS1
Mobile Light Force-PS1
R-Type Final-PS2
Xyanide-Xbox
Phalanx-GBA
Gradius Galaxies-GBA
Super R-Type-SNES
R-Type III-SNES
Fire Shark-Genesis
Sol Divide-PS1
Mobile Light Force 2-PS2
UN Squadron-SNES
Super Earth Defense Force-SNES
Gradius III-SNES
Silpheed: the Lost Planet-PS2
D Force-SNES

Not bad for a guy on a budget without importing. Still wanna get Raiden III (PS2), Gradius V (PS2), and Thunder Force V(PS1). Thanks for the help, friends!

Oh yeah, if you want a cool compilation, Taito Legends 2 is wonderful. Metal Black, Gekirindan, Darius Gaiden, G Darius, Gun & Frontier, Insector X, and Raystorm are on there and I got it for 10 bucks. Talk about a shmup deal! Very Happy

I just bought "R-Type Complete CD" for the PC Engine on eBay. I had a pirate copy for a while but I liked it so much that I had to buy it for real. Actually I don't mind dying in that game because you get to hear a cool guitar riff when you run out of lives.

That's a really good collection Black Flag.
One shmup I've been playing alot of recently is "Gate of Thunder". You have to check it out. It's on the PC Engine / Wii Virtual Console. If you don't have either there's a pretty good legal PC Engine emulater for PC (MagicEngine) which will boot original PCE discs.

Oh man, I love R-Type. My favorite shooter of all time. I've heard Gate of Thunder is good. I actually got Raiden III on PS2 a few days back.

OK. Got Gradius V today and I'm in love! It made me change my freakin avatar!

Much like R-type Final, it's a perfect balance of old school 2d gameplay with brilliant 3d graphics. Huh huh, me likee things go boom. Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

Gekioh is another one for the PS1 I forgot to add, but it looks like I don't have to anymore.
